Original Engine Colors - Need help
Hi All, Even thought my restoration is going very slowly (i have three kids under 7!), the time has come to now repaint the engine. Its stripped down, cleaned up, and a few little mods done. Can someone please help me out with information relating to what the original colors of the engine are meant to be?. For some reason i picture the block and head being black, with the rocker cover being blue........but not even sure if im right. And even if i am, not sure on shades. Pictures, descriptions, documents.....anything will be great. Thanks very much guys. Im ready to paint it. Cheers Dave

From memory the high compression engine (code 'J', manual, trans code 'V') was black sump, block and head, ford blue tappect cover and cam belt cover; low compression (code 'R', auto, trans code 'Y') was all ford blue

Thanks Guys, is that to say that on a 1980 RS, the entire motor (including rocker cover) is painted black? Dave

Thanks for the replies guys. So, sounds to me like the sump, block and head should be black, with the rocker cover being blue (and possibly the timing belt cover and air cleaner as well. Is that the general consensus?.Wouls rather not have to repaint down the track if possible :) Any idea on paint code for the blue? On top of that though, are there any casting marks on the engine that can be used to identify if it is a "High compression" (J) engine, or a "Low Compression" (R) engine?

From memoory HC & LC was defined by the compression height (distance between centre of gudgeon/wrist pin and crown of piston) - no external markings on the block hence different colours. From memory the VHT aersol enamel SP134 Ford Light Blue is very close - SP755 Ford Competion Blue was far too light and SP125 Ford Dark Blue was far too dark.

Thanks Jimmy, IIRC i read somewhere a while back that most (in fact almost all) of the 2L pinto's in escort etc were all high compression? In other words, the high compression motor was pretty much the standard motor? Do you know where i might find specs an what the measurements are to determine HC or LC? Cheers Dave

HC was standard motor, LC only used for auto. From memory HC compression height 41.6, LC compression height 40.6

My '78 pinto had a black cover when new. Peter Lytton has had his '80 RS from new, so I'd ask him.

From memory when I bought mine which was one of the last one's sold. the engine was all black and the air cleaner was blue. There should be sales brochures around which show the engine bay.
