4 speed reconditioning options
Gday all as part of my MK2 RS rebuild the gearbox needs looking at. Basically, its leaking oil out of most seals except surprisingly the extension housing seal ( which is rubber coated which I believe may be the wrong type???? are these supposed to be steel?) there is a small amount of play in the output shaft that the taishaft slides onto ( not sure how much is acceptable ) , and 2 of the bolt holes for the starter motor in the bellhousing are stripped out. So, Im thinking Ill scource a second hand bellhousing and take the box to a gearbox place to get a service and checkover for bearings, wear etc, Unless its cheaper to buy a recoed one ( not sure if anyone stocks these) What are your thoughts and experiences ( Im not interested in putting in a 5 speed just incase anyone suggests it!) Cheers Shep

Totally not worth the cost of getting one rebuilt. You can buy second hand ones for $50 or less. I have 3 spare. You are right about the rear seal, the rubber coated seals are metric and are wrong, they should be a metal outer band. some end float in the output shaft is normal

Couldnt tell you on that one but you shouldnt need to import a seal from England. If your gearbox has a metal outer seal carefully remove it and take it to your local bearing shop so they can measure it and match it up.

I agree with Gdub, stick some seals and a new top gasket in it, put some decent oil in and you're done. He's also right about the seal, the one listed by Kelpro doesn't fit. I'll post the part number of the correct seal when I get to work tomorrow. If you must get it looked at and reco'd I highly recommend Edgar at Fourd Four in melb, he's done a couple for me and they've been spot on, Cheers Woz

+1 Edgar really knows these boxes well. He did all of my rally car boxes and I never had any problems. I believe he is cutting gears for close ratio boxes these days.

Just for future reference, here's a 402953N. The dimensions look right for the rear of the Type E tail housing, although the outside edge is not bare metal like the original. It was more difficult to get hold of than I expected too.
