What do people think of replica xy's & xw's?

Hey guys,

A mate an I were talking about replica xy's & xw's the other day and he was outraged that I thought they weren't too bad at all.
My view is, it's next to impossible to find a genuine xy/xw that hasn't been restored therefore <$100k - so if you really want one, for a lot of people there's only one affordable option - the replica. Some of the replicas are restored to awesome detail as well. Nonetheless, he was disgusted - but he's all about things being original.

Anyway, what do you guys think about em? They're obviously not the same, but what choice do you have if you love em and want one!

If you can't afford an orginal one then the replica makes great sense.

At least then you'll have a car and as time goes on and the originals get more and more expensive the price for the replicas is bound to increase too.

I have no problem with replicas, especially when originals are so rare that one could conceivably never see one, even in a museum.  Case in point is the Cobra 427.  A TV series called American Muscle Cars did an episode on this car, and every single one of the many they showed was a replica, and much of the time was spent on how to go about building or buying a good one.  As long as it isn't being passed off an an original, where's the harm?

I agree - why not have the same performance, looks and smile on your face at a fraction of the price!
I think the only ones who have a problem are the purists who have paid 10X the price for theoretically the same car
Although, the way repo parts prices are going it may be cheaper to buy the genuine item rather than build a replica.
I wish I still had my XBGT (genuine) which I completed a ground up restoration and sold in 1995 when they were affordable - I thought I did well to get $11k

Please - no comments on the sunnies

Look at what $12500 buys you today. Imagine what $12500 would buy for an Escort Cortina Capri etc today.

Rule number 1 of cars - they cost more then what you will sell them for. As for the reproduction stuff, I read somewhere that alot of the aftermarket retailers have tripled prices over the last 5-10 Yrs - I agree that costs have risen too, but there must be a lot of people buying the stuff to. You can prettty much build a Monaro or GT from these suppliers

Some people make things happen, others watch it happen and others wonder what just happened - which one are you?

That's just an asking price. I'd like to see what a rust bucket like that would go for though

I don't have a problem with replicas. All the GTs were was an optioned up Falcon anyway. Nothing wrong with bolting all the good bits onto a base model car.

Only time it becomes an issue is when a replica is flogged off as genuine and someone is done out of their hard earned.

With replicas existing it also means people race them without destroying originals. My brother has been liking all of the replica parts as he has a XW sedan and a XY wagon and as long the parts are not from Rare Spares he's happy.
