Ford Capri 5 Speed V Type 9

Guys, its been awhile!

Just searching for ideas and clarification.
If I can get my hands on a Capri V6 5 Speed Gear box, will i be able to make it work if i change it over to the type 9 input shaft as by looking at exploded view diagrams, the gearboxes appear to be the same length/internals/dimensions etc
Id be replacing all the seals and front and rear bearings and what not anyway, so have the gearbox apart to put the correct input shaft in anyway...

I was trying to have a search through the forum but couldnt seem to find an answer....

Thanks,
Kieran

I believe the v6 input shaft has 19 teeth on the input shaft versus 18 on the 2 litre version.  This would therefore necessitate a change in lay gears also so the costs start to add up.

I have seen people take a grinder to the longer v6 shaft.

Do you want the v6 box for the ratios and/or heavy duty bearings?  I have a 2Lt type 9 gearbox I would be willing to part with if it helps you out at all.  Just PM me if interested.

    In case you did not know;
    Box                          2Lt                     2.8v6
    1st                          3.65                    3.36
    2nd                         1.97                    1.81
    3rd                          1.37                    1.26
    4th                          1.00                    1.00
    5th                          0.82                    0.825

I have a few type 9 articles I could email you if they would assist.......

    Thanks for your replies.

Mk1 Oz, appreciate the offer and wil send you a pm regarding the box to try and work out which way to proceed.

I just opened up the top and counted the teeth and it appears to be 18...Im going to check it again though because i want to be 100% correct.

If it is 18 i will grab a new input shaft from the bearing kits in the uk and hopefully that does the trick cause on the website it appears as though a 18teeth long input shaft did exist which says its from a 2.3V6 and Diesel ?? http://www.bearingkits.co...e75466c7654db5e5

The only reason i went with the capri box is that it came up for a good price and at the time wasn't aware of the difference in input shaft length.

If i could get some of those type 9 articles also that would be fantastic.

    Thnks again.

    Thanks Wombat.
So maybe reading that i have a diesel box/2.3 V6 box, which would make sense with the 18 tooth laygear and the long input shaft.
I will do the final check on 1st gear to confirm it, but that seems how it is. If it was just changing the input shaft over, it would probably make sense cost wise to keep the box I have, but now also If i was to change first gear i will definitely see what Mk1_Oz can do for me.
I wonder if the ratios are like however?? Everything im reading says they are rubbish.

I think its turning into quite a mission.... Another gearbox seems like it may be the way to go.

The diesel box has rubbish ratios so don't go there.  Not sure what the 2.3v6 are.

You can check your ratios by putting it into a gear then rotating the input shaft by hand and counting the revolutions on teh output shaft.
