+ or - Offsets

I'm  all at sea here, i'm trying to get a set of 15" rims.  and one shop tells me i need - offset and the next shop says i need + offset And i like the look of Lavinhard Fin 7s  that are  - offset  will they work ????? The ozzie tyres web site, tells me that they will fit but i think that might be shop spin.
Regards
James

UNDERSTEER is when you hit the wall with the front of the car. OVERSTEER is when you hit the wall with the rear. HORSEPOWER is how fast you hit the wall. TORQUE is how far you take the wall with you.

I have a set of 15x7 0 offset rims on the project car. There is absolutely no chance of them fitting on a normal car.

I also have a set of 13x7 +6 et rims that fit nicely under a standard car provided that the tyres arent bigger than 205/60/13.

What offset you need really depends on what width rim you want.

    15 by 6 and 7 with 12P fit my mk1 sedan fine and my van. I have also seen 6p 15 x 6's fit nicely on a mk1 coupe.

I went through the same sort of thing about 6 months ago before i decided on wheels..

From memory my 15x6j (195/50/15 tyres) wheels have and offset of +15et? And they fit fine, but are getting tight if your car is pretty low like mine (i do have to roll the rear lips though so will be fine).. I wouldn't really want to go any wider offset, and i have RS guards on the front.

From my understanding (others may want to add to this) I think anything between +15 to +25 is good for 7j wheels, & +5 to +15 offset usually works ok for 6j wheels with up to 195 or 205/50 tyres under standard RS arches. (obviously you'll have to be more accurate the lower your car is).

Ive only got a pic of the rear wheel and not the front on my computer here.. but its very similar stance to the green escort below if that gives you more of an idea..

If some of this looks familiar, it's because I posted parts of it to another Ford forum recently.  It refers to wheels fitted to a late 70s MkII Escort, but hopefully the following examples will still be of assistance to those with other cars.

The 13 x 5" 'styled' steel wheel (as fitted to GLs and the like) has about 102mm backspace (i.e. 4"), making the offset about 25p (i.e +25). The offset isn't stamped on the wheel, so this value is a very close approximate.

The 13 x 5.5" alloy 'Volante' wheel, which was optional on all Escorts but in my experience mostly seen on RS2000s, has a 108mm (4.25") backspace, making the offset about 25p (same disclaimer as above).  It makes sense that Ford did this, as it keeps the vehicle track exactly the same as the lesser steel wheel.

To achieve the same 4.25" backspace in a 6" wheel requires a +19 offset, which, probably not coincidentally, is what many UK RS 4 spoke alloys came with, and for a 7" wheel the offset is +6.  Some people have fitted 7" wheels with a +6 offset to a Mk II and found that they have had to roll the guards, whereas some with 7" and offset +12 have said they have no such problems (as they are set back a further 6mm).

I suggest determining how much backspace you have and working backwards from there.  Remember, the offset is a measure of how far the mounting face is from the center of the rim, which is why the number changes with rim width even though the backspace might be the same.

It is all relative to each individual car guys, the manufacturing tolerances were'nt as tight as they are these days so it is possible that a set of wheels that fit without scubing on one car, might scrub on another car.

You should definately know your available back space as flighter says...this is where you can start working out what will fit.

From my own observations the following sizes can work for most classic fords...
    0et to +12et for 6" rims,
    +6et to +18et for 7" rims,
8" wheels will fit some cars but you will definately need to trial fit.
Beyond 8" is also possible in some applications...but will require some massaging or even surgery for the real big sizes.

As said by Fordsy, -et offsets are pretty much reserved for arched cars...the only exception to this is the modern style of stretching narrow tyres onto rims as seen it the UK and drift scenes, this type of fitment changes the game all over again...I think you could see -12et to -25et 8" rims fitting under std cars with 185 tyres. I think this is the style that Boxxer above runs with 13x8" wheels.

It is always best to trial fit a test wheel with known sizing and offset to do your final checks before buying new wheels. Unless you want to stick to close to factory sizes, measuring and trial fitting is a fact of life.

I'm now running 15*7 with +13p offset. 195/50*15 tyres. These work fine.
