5 speed

has anyone had much to do with the layc ock 5 speed for the essex v6 - looks to have a decent OD (there should not be a space btn layc and ock but try to make it one word and see what happens - stupid program!)

Just substitute the letter o for a zero: Layc0ck

I think Hotboost has one of these that he's thinking of putting into his car, but not sure if he's rebuilt it yet.

by the looks of it the top rod might hit the tunnel and the input shaft and snout looks short. is it for an essex or a colonge, as ive just had to rebuild my box to put alonger shaft init, but it wasn't a layc0ck box

IIRC you need to modify the tunnel as something fouls if was a bolt in fit it would have been a very popular UK conversion in the 80's, worth a look though

yes legend has it that it bolts straight up to the essex - same mounting position to the gearbox mount and same over all length as the original 4 speed. The top linkage does look like it might foul the tunnel though. Yes laywilly - arf arf! It appeals as being a decent conversion esp with the electronic overdrive - on 3rd and 5th .....

Yes I have one - spare- .JR is right will have to modify tunnel a bit. Also convert bell housing over I think, as mine is off a tvr. They were also off zephyr zodiac as well.
At this stage I'm not going to use it as I have now finished all under floor stuff.
So it can sit in the shed until I get sick of tripping over it.

The one pictured is off an essex powered zodiac but as JR said - it must be a bit of a headache to fit b/c it wasn't used as a conversion in any sites ive had a look at - pity - nice overdrive etc
what is the best 5 speed conversion? The celica steel 5 speed - ive blown 2 of those up. I have a type 9 out of a 2.8 but concerned about strength. Either the T5 or supra i suppose but reluctant to chop into the shell too much. (Yes wools ive reformed myself on this one!)

I have a type 9 in my capri, which isn't standard!! Not sure if you can still get them but it was modified by a company (UK) called "turbo technics" basically all they did was drill and tap a thread into the front of the layshaft so you could bolt/hold the layshaft thru the bell housing.A few years after this Ford Motor Company carried out a very similar modifcation.
