Retarding the timing TOO much will cause the fuel to burn in the exhaust manifold. A bright orange glowing manifold and turbo looks cool but it warps flanges, melts metal, kills turbo bearing, hammers oil temp, etc.
If you work on 1deg/1psi straight up that would be a good start, so on a pinto that means ~25deg total at max torque point. You can ramp up a couple more degrees after that but that is fine tuning.
This is why in their most crude form carby blow through doesn't work, they need something like a msd 6btm. The fueling is easy getting a proper ignition curve isn't. On the std dissy the vac can should work as an advance and retard for a budget job.
