BMW E30 rotors or Laser TX3 rotors

Hi guys,

I am in the process of doing the Volvo calliper conversion and wanted some thoughts on whether to use the laser TX3 discs or the E30 BMW ones.

I have attached a sheet that sets out the dimensions of each compared to the standard escort one.

As far as I can tell the only real differnces are

1. the centre hole diameter. The BMW is smaller than the escort one so it needs to be widened or the hub machined down. The laser one needs no work.
2. The disk thickness. BMW is 22mm and the laser is 18mm

So is the extra thickness of the BMW worth it for the little bit of extra work to get them to fit of is there nothing in it?

Thoughts are appreciated.

Matt

I use the tx3 rotors on my rally car with decent pads and have never had a problem with them.

The only issue that i am aware of with the BMW rotors is that they run very close to the tie rod end.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

    Thanks

I went TX3 rotors also. Machined the diameter down from 260mm to 256mm because I was worried they wouldn't clear the caliper but probably din;t need to worry. Slotted the hub mounting holes out ~ 1mm each with a die grinder, and got a machine shop to make up a bush to mount the rotor perfectly central on the hub as the TX3 rotor centre hole is slightly larger than the Escort hub.

Don't go for the DBA plain rotors - the swept area has a step in it which the pad overhangs on the inside, meaning that as the pad wears down it won't come off the rotors easily and you'll have to bleed the caliper pistons back just to release the pads (found that out the hard way)

Alternatively just get some Capri rotors - only 247mm but no mounting dramas.

Another way to go would be find some rotors with a really high hat and just mount them over the front of the hub...
