fuel problems

Hi guys,

I've got a pretty basic problem, but im in a strange position. See im living in Austria and my ol man is keeping the Escort alive in Perth for me.

After my dad got the starter motor rebushed recently the car has again been paralysed thanks to a fuel problem. Dad's keen to get this problem sorted without the help of a mechie so I said I'd ask you guys for a bit of troubleshooting device.

The escort has got a 1600 kent, 32/36 weber and a 'glass bowl' type fuel pump. yes, there's petrol in the tank :)

The ol boy is telling me that theres no fuel getting to the carby. He says that the glass bowl on the fuel pump appears to be pretty much empty. yet neither of us can say if this is due to a fuel line blockage or a dead fuel pump.

My question for you guys is - how can he troubleshoot this? I recommended taking the fuel line between the pump and carby off, turning over the motor and putting my finger over the fuel pump outlet. If the pump still functions, you should be able to feel little pulses of air coming out. Or so my logic goes. [%]

Has anyone got any (better) ideas? Any help is much appreciated.

Cheers

Take the air cleaner housing off and try tapping on the top of the carby where the fuel line goes in. Sounds like a stuck needle and seat to me. Old Holdens used to suffer from this quite a bit.

i had a similar problem last year with my escort van.it hadnt been started for a few months, anyway got it going and drove for about 50ks,then all of a sudden it spluttered and conked out, couldnt start it.turned out to be stale fuel, but what happened was ,the mesh filter in the fuel pump was completley clogged with a jelly like substance. i cleaned the pump filter with carby cleaner, removed and flushed the fuel tank, blew compressed air through the fuel line and put it all back together.i put in new fuel and she fired up straight away.i decided to put an in line fuel filter in just before the fuel filter, in case it happens again.thankfully, its going fine since.
    hope this helps

Thanks Celtic. Sounds like it could be a couple of things. I haven't had the chance to speak to the ol man yet but I will pass on the hints. Im pretty sure I had a fuel filter in line before the pump, but thats prolly 3 years old now - at least!

Dunno if I can put the ol man through the entire troubleshooting rigamarole - if he loses patience I can always get on to it once I get back in the country come sept.

Thanks again for the advice and ill let you know how it goes
