gearbox extension housings question

got a rocket 4 speed to go in my project car. the extension housing that came with it has the gear stick hole about 5cm futher back than my original box. when the rocket box is installed in the car the hole is too far back.

i have my original box apart at the moment and want to swap the extension housings. are they interchangeable?
also just for my own knowledge, what models had the housing with the hole futher back?

another quick question. can you remove the housing without removing the lay shaft? took it out on my original box, dummy shaft wasn't quite good enough and dropped most the needles. will have to make myself a proper one anyway.

cheers
