Thermostat housing probs

Has anyone come across this problem. The rubber seal under the thermostat keeps falling off the lip every 50kms or so[:(!] Tried 2 different housings with no fix. does anyone run an inner circlip or something else to hold the thermostat down???? Both thermostat housings are from kilkenny castings. Could it be a dud batch??

Isn't there ment to be a umm don t know how to explain it, but like an 'O' sort of clip that goes over it? My housing didn't come with it I had to use it from the original one.

You should be able to see a tiny groove all the way round just above the ring? it goes in there.

Yep just had the same thing, was eating them, you should have a circlip that sits over it, the new ones i've noticed are a piece of wire, the one i had was a flat type.

Trying to think what mine was but i used a brass thread from the end of a shock absorber i think, fit in there perfectly just cut it down.

Instead of a inner circlip? or as a kinda Sheath to hold it in??

Sorry, I missed the most important bit...

I made a brass Oring to replace the rubber O ring, with the circlip holding the brass ring in.

It seals as it should do and won't fall in a heap. It is probably better then the Oring as it won't dissapear. I only got half of the oring back last time.

Probably just things are getting cheaper quality, previously i'd never had a problem with them.

I dont use rubber seal or spring clip - put thermostat to bottom of housing & retain in place with short length of aluminium pipe which comes just shy of housing flange face (pipe was ex heavy wall alloy roll cage - had to cut small section out & 'spring' into housing)
Been like this for 3.5 years & seals well because filling coolant is a slow process

    Cheers, Gregg
