Battery for 1600 auto goes on drivers side, battery for 1600 manual goes on passenger side.

OK, thanks for the quick answer
Makes you wonder why the difference between the auto and manual?
Is it due to starter motor location?

Yep, the long lead required to power the starter on the auto means too much power drop so they relocated the battery to shorten the lead

Yet in the escort twincam they put the battery in the boot. Must be pretty big voltage drop there.

I would have thought a more substantial cable would have been the easier solution.
