losing spark. advice please

driving home tonight in the daily (kent 1600) the car started playing up.

basically i would take off in first fine but when i changed it into second it would backfire out the carby and lose all spark. id roll to a stop and it would be hard to start. eventually it would start again but same thing. when changing into second ( motor under more load) it would cough and splutter and die.

i got most of the way home but eventually it gave up and wouldn't start and i had to get the old man to tow me home.

im thinking maby the condensor in the dizzy. just wondering if anyone has had this drama before. i need the car running by Monday so i can get to work.

cheers

I had a similar problem, But I was 2 hours drive from home on a Sunday night, It was with a Bosch GT40 Coil (Not the Oil Filled Type), Car would run and drive but when the coil heated up under load it would fail. After a few minutes and after cooling down it would then allow the car to start and run but of course the process would repeat itself. I Replaced the coil and haven't had a problem since, But I do now carry a spare - Bruce
