steering rack end bushing shot

does anybody know what goes on inside a mk1 escort steering rack?

The bushing in the left end of the rack seems to be a bit poked, the oil is getting out into the rack boot and the rack is sloppy. makes a clonking noise when driving on bumpy road.

does anybody know how to get the bushings out?

Cheers

The rack has to be striped down completely, its very easy except the drilling out of the pin at the ball end. The end bush is available from whiteline (w11113) or nolathane (41020 I think).I have just rebuilt my rack and about to rebuild a second for another car. The new whiteline bush has changed and I am waiting for whiteline to clarify if the bush has indeed changed or the part has been put in the wrong bag. They cost about $9.00.Smacka is getting some in with new thrust cups and springs I believe.

    1. Remove the rack from the car.
    2. Remove the track rod end and lock nut from the passenger side.
    3. Remove the boot.
    4. Locate pin between track ball and luck nut (called inner joint in pic below, located at the end of the rack)
    5. Drill out pin.
    6. Undo the lock nut and track ball housing.
    7. Remove ball plastic thrust and spring.
    8. Remove the damper plate and plastic damper (2x 1/2 bolts on flat plate, dont lose any gasket shim that may be there.)
    9. Remove the 2 pinion spline cap bolts and pull out the pinion.
    10. Slide out the rack assembly from the tube from driver’s side.
    11. Remove the worn bush from the tube.

    Reassemble in reverse order.
Reset the track ball force against the rack rod to around 3-5 KG effort to pull on rod.
You would be advised to set the drivers side at the same time. I coated all the components in grease and ditched the oil.

Non of these are escort racks, but the lay out is very simular.

Just confirmed with Whiteline the part No W11113 is correct and the bush with a collar is in the wrong bag.
Ensure the bush you get with part No W11113 looks like the blue bush in the photo above, that is, with no collar.
Whiteline are posting out to me, FOC the correct bushes and apologised for the problem. Good to deal with people that rectify a problem without a drawn out meladrama. Well done Whiteline, great to deal with.

Just a note, check out the track control arm bushes and ball joints and strut tops any worn bits there will also give you a knock or clunk.

yep its like hendo said and number 4 is important as its the one that gets everyone

    4. Locate pin between track ball and luck nut (called inner joint in pic below, located at the end of the rack)
    5. Drill out pin.

when reasembaling please put oil in the ball befor you start and this ajustment nut is not talked up the drag rod ball must be free to move so just ajust the nut untill the movment is just there ---

juat some useless info these parts are the same as most cortina's Mk 3 & 4 & 5 well the mark 2 escort rack bushes and nuts can be changed - the cortina's drag link is longer----

yeah got most of this sorted now. Managed to get the bush from a racecar prep shop in town that specializes in Escorts.
got the rack pulled down, old bush out, new grease in, rack back together. Just gota wait til Tuesday to go and get an eigth" drill bit and lock pin.
Have been using a haynes manual i picked up the other day. makes it easy.
    Thanks for the advice guys
