winscreen washers

Guys,

i'm trying to get my Capri licenced before this weekend and the only thing which is not working for me is the windscreen washer. It is an original footpump action type - it all seems to be presurised, and the 2 way valve is working - but there dosnt seem to be any water in the pipe from the foot pump to the 2 way valve - is there a way of getting water in the system without removing the carpet and removing the pipe from the end of the pump and sucking it through manually ??
when i push the pump now all i get is bubbles in the bottle !!

    Gravity will get the water to the pump so if you are geting bubbles in the bottle then its sucking air from outside and pushing it to the bottle - so seems you might have your hoses on back to front, or your valve installed wrong - just a guess have never used one.

    As a side note I know people consider originality to be good but there are some things that should be changed and the foot pump is one of them. They leak and rust out your floor, and you will usually get a surprise jet of water every time your foot thinks its a foot rest. Just my humble opinion. Good luck getting it sorted.

    I have to agree with you there - the foot pump is not a very good design in my opinion. As it so happens there is some slight dampness behid the carpet where the actual pump is - maybe thats causing the problem !!

    Just as a thought - you would think these footpumps were intended to be ontop of the carpet not below - they would be a lot easier to press and also to service/replace if required - you would also find it easier to notice any leaks. Does anyone know if the intention was to have these below or ontop of the carpet ??

    I think from memory the pump is mounted below the carpet and the centre part is set thru the carpet. Its probably just a case of whoever fitted the carpet didn't want to cut the hole.

    I think caprispecial is proberbly right my original Capri which I had in the late '70s had the pump showing through the carpet where it was fixed I am not sure.

    From memory the factory carpet has a semi circle cut out around the base of the pump, the pump is held to the floor with a couple of self tappers. New carpet doesn't have the cut out thats why you see a lot of cars with the pump covered

    thanks lads,

    problem solved - the hose from the foot pump to the 2 way valve had a small split in it - pump is mounted on top of carpet - much better i think

    i did away with the pump system in the corty and fitted a electric pump more reliable.

    btw
    i do licening inspections, cars, trailers and caravans, yellow stickers etc...

    According to my engineer in NSW the windscreen squirters are optional but wipers are not. Hence I am not going to run any
