Falcon: A nearly extinct bird.

Might be a bit late for this section.
Although if we are talking early falcons my family has had a few: xr fairmont, xk wagon, xr panel van and xa gt rpo82.
The xr was a huge leap forward. Prior to this the fastest ford was a cortina mk1 gt, winning bathurst 3 times. The xr in 289 v8 form was an eye opener.
If someone asked: what is your favourite falcon the answer could well be the xr fairmont 289.
The xr panel van was a great workhorse for us traveling all over the eastern suburbs of melbourne to transport us carpenters to the next job.
The xagt rpo82? My brother bought this in the seventies even tho I told him to get the gtho ph3, he said the xa looks more modern.  He still has it now
and will never sell it.
Actualy Ive just remembered my favourite falcon was  my  67 fairlane 289, what a fantastic cruiser and reasonably economical to run, getting about 24 mpg.

My first legal kah was a MK II Corty!(bought in 1990)(had 4-5 kahz before that) and I still have it! It needs a bit(lot) of T.L.C. to get it back on the road. It is a L model w/ the wood dash face. I had a G.T. dash (AUST) in it,(it now has a LOTUS G.T. dash in it.)  and I did a lot of work to it! New paint, new interea,(spell check!),FULL reco on the engine, w/ a 0.060 over bore,(made it a 1.725)! went like a rocket!!,new brakes, new tyres, new carpet, new shocks, lowering kit,(2'all round) detailed engine bay,a far bit of chrome work...and the list go's on.... . anyway,at one stage I had 10 MK II corty's, then I got it down to about 3 or 4. Then I bought a XT Falcon Panelvan!! That kah changed everything!!!!!(the cortina program was axed) that was back on the 15/10/2002! and I still have the Pano!! I now have 4 XT's,(1 sedan,2 panelvan's,1 s/wagon.) I have a  XR Fairmont sedan(according to my w/shop manual) It's all factory original and NEVER been molested!!last rego was back in 1982!!(sticker still on the flipper glass) and it's been off the road ever since! i also have a XW panelvan I use for drag racing!!(The Vantom) It has a 250 2V pre-X-flow donk in it,and the best so far down the 1/8th mile is a 9:95 at 115km!!(1/8th mile is 200m.) I'v also won a trophy w/ it!!, and it cost me $800 to build and buy it!!!!!!(If any of you blokes live in the Wellington area,(N.S.W.)the first meet of the year is on the 23/3/14! at bodangrah airport. the XT pano is my home at the moment, and has been for nearly 2 years now. in the 11 years of ownership, I have had 7 motor's in it! the last one been the biggest and the best!! by far!!(351c).but now it has spun a bearing,so it has to come out and be fixt! which is a good thing, for I want to drive it round and through Australia! as soon as I can get it ready to do so.It'll have a G.T. spec cam, tuned extractors and a new fuel delivery set-up. should liven it up a little!! I would love to get a XR station wagon!! I just love-em!!. Till next time,Cheers.

Man my XT just started giving me serious trouble and I just can't find the battery for it. I think it may be time for an upgrade :/ It was fun while it lasted..

    Hi Ron

your article reminds me of my first Ford Tank which was my ZA 289 given to me by a client who lost his licence back in 1976 for repetitive Drink-Driving........I rarely saw him sober !  It was a great cruiser with column shift auto, and with its only fault in that it had incurable over-heating, no matter what was tried. Sold it for a HK Panel van which I converted to "MONARO GTS" all the way where possible.

My Uncle purchased a Brand New XY 351 Fairmont GS in Monza green with Gold stripe, and I've been the only mechanic to touch it since 1972. He gave it to me about 10 years ago and it's still like new inside and out........I just adore it !  It's only done 130,000 miles and its only major was at 120,000 when I pulled the Tranny for Major Overhaul and all it needed was a Friction & Gasket Kit ! Torque Conv naturally was changed as good insurance. Caused by water leaking from Radiator Cooling Lines into tranny.

Never allowed any A/T to ever run again thru the radiator on any of my collection inc my XC 5.8 Cobra which I purchased new in 1978 ( once bitten was enough )....plus you can monitor the "heat" with a remote Cooler.
Lucky my Capri GTV6 , Wolseley 15/60 and Prefect 100E doesn't have this problem to solve !
    Regards
    Bernie

It's a sad indictment on our country when we have to face NO MORE AUSTRALIAN FORDS OR HOLDENS ............. and Valiants !  ...  or any car manufacturing at all  :-(
