woah, full on.
I'd just cut the floor out and reverse it in an instant!
Good effort. Even the hacksaw job is neat.

Did you see Dave ('s Garage) Youtube do the same thing with his RX8 box for his MK1 about 6 months ago?
Like you say, looks to be a popular trick in the UK, a bit like banding steels was.

I did consider it to be honest, but I wanted to retain the center console position and all that jazz. I did actually see that mod Dave did, Its his method I'm going to use for shortening the shaft and getting the new roll pin hole central  - tack the shifter in place so I can use it for a pilot hole.

Unfortunately no places near me had aluminum braising rods so I had to order some online, should arrive before the weekend.

Three months can fly by cant it.

Lots has happened in the last few months, but nothing worth documenting TBH. It's also sad to see that the forum might close at the end of the year, I have switched off my ad blocker for this site, not sure if it will help but at least its something.

I've been travelling a lot for work and was away internationally for nearly the whole of May. The car has been progressing in the background and a major milestone has been achieved, the car has paint on it! I was so excited to see the car I forgot to take photos, lucky my dad was with me and he snapped a few - he's not the greatest camera man but he got a few good ones.

It came up mint, that is straight off the gun and baked, nothing else, now its getting the black satin accents around the windows and then it will be done and back home.

On the mechanical side of things I tried my hand braising with the cut off section of the type 9... what a waste of time that was, lets just say it was back to the drawing board. So i decided to bite the bullet and get a proper Mig welder, before I just had a gasless. I also bought the bits to set it up for Aluminum and had a crack.

Let me tell you that casting is a BITCH to weld, it's SO dirty. I think its come out as good as it can though and should work just fine. Next step is to clean up the welds a bit more, shorted the shaft and then test it. That will be next weekend though. I'll need a new tailshaft sleeve bush too, the welds punched through a little on the inside and distorted it but it's not the end of the world - at least i know it penetrated!

Well done Mark.
The race must be on to get builds back on the road before the forum stumps!
Now the fun bit starts.

Well that was an absolute mission, do not recommend trying to drill out a new hole for the shifter saddle roll pin on the selector rail in place, I ended up messing up the position which had a cascading effect on how the transmission felt when selecting gears.

In the photo below you can see where the saddle should be aligned, basically if you look at the casting line of the extension housing the bottom rail of the saddle should pretty much line up with that if you want the gears to select nicely. When i put the roll pin in the saddle ended up being rotated clockwise about 5 degrees. This means you cant get 5th and when selecting 1st/2nd the lever goes too far right, causing interference.

The solution? Take the saddle out, weld up the top hole along the left edge and re-drill the hole, this rotated it at the bottom enough that it now ran true to the centerline.

The trans now selects all gears nicely, 5th detent has the correct amount of resistance so it will be smooth from 2nd to 3rd unless you really mess up and reverse lock out operates as intended.

Now thats out the way i feel pretty relieved, I do need to a few new roll pins though as I'm not happy with how slack the old ones are, I also need to put in the driveshaft yoke bushing in and clean up the alloy welds and paint the damn thing. But the hard part is done and even better it was "Free".

Agreed, all it took was some spare time and big boy pants to get onto it, huge credits for the mod. I would have cut the stick hole and spun it around, main reason for me is being 6ft high and like a near gearstick instead of reaching for it.

I got a couple of photos sent to me from the panel shop today... The car is ALMOST done! Should be able to organize the truck to collect it late next week or early the next.

Got some other parts coming to finalize a few other things too, can't wait to get it home and take some photos under the garage lights!

Ya gotta be happy with that. Take care on the rebuilding not to scuff that perfect paintwork
