RPM gauge/meter not working (rogerlam)

So I bought a 1990 MR2 the other day but didn't realise the RPM meter wasn't working.
I've been searching around the internet and found that it could be the capacitors.
Before I do anything about the capacitors, would there be any other causes as to why the RPM isn't working?
To clarify, everything else in the cluster works fine.
