(jlee165)

As mentioned by many it seems their labor charges are ridiculously high.
Take a week off work, get the parts outsourced and start researching how to do stuff yourself!

For example
'Rh Inner Steering Rack End Is Worn $220'

I ordered RH & LH rack ends with boots from autobarn last week for a total of $61 AU.
Got home and spent 50 mins under my MR2 and had it schmick including a wheel alignment after an hour and a half.
Labor is too expensive these days and if you want to own an MR2 your going to want to learn the car in, out and upside down.

Re: Is this price crazy? (kameleon)

No one was starting a argument, just stating my opinion as were you.

Back on topic:- O P have you shopped around to get the work done yet or looked into getting the parts at a better price?

Re: Is this price crazy? (3sgeTurbo)

I like this forum and I really don't want to start any arguments.

But plenty of workshops I know have racks with at least 40+ different size engine mounts that suit most cars, we used to get them supplied by Cool drive.

And a MR2 is the same as any FWD car, only difference its all in the back, if a mechanic can't properly quote a 20 year old car then I don't think they should be quoting at all, I have worked on brand new Camry's and Lexus's that are more complex than a MR2.
Re: Is this price crazy? (kameleon)

sorry what mechanics have 20 dollar engine mounts on the shelf for all cars? none that i know of.

There are a few things that may not be right about that quote but gee you should see some that i write at work...

If the mechanic does not know all the little quirks with these cars the quote will always be slightly off, give them some slack they may just be miss-informed. Very easy for forum people who know the cars inside out to pass judgement but this is the internet not the real world of retail.

I suggest getting your own parts such as people have suggested and take said items to whomever you feel comfortable with for fitment. Get pre quoted so there are no hidden costs and you should be ok.

With regards to the fuel tank issue, i would remove the entire thing and have it cleaned out properly with a new pump. If you don't all your new filters and pump will block up with crap that may come loose in the future wrecking your newly purchased parts.

You bought the car cheap and as someone said it needs work, so don't go Jewish on it and you will have a nicely running car.

Re: Is this price crazy? (track_mr2)

Lol totally agree with 3sge Turbo.

My favorites were these lot:
Front Control Arm Inner Bushes Are Worn $360
Caster Rod Bushes Are Perished $290
Front Sway Bar D Rubbers Are Worn $187
Rear Lower Radius Are Bushes Are Cracked $420

$187 to change the front D bushings that is massive! Caster rod bushings $290!!! WTF.

Re: Is this price crazy? (3sgeTurbo)

I used to be a mechanic and my Dad was a mechanic who taught me, I still do lots of work now in a mates workshop and that has to be the most expensive quotes that I have ever seen!

The only way it would ever cost that much is if all the parts were 100% genuine Toyota,

<Start Rant>
$360 for the front engine mount? all mechanics carry press in mounts, they are $20 worth of rubber, and it takes 10 mins to remove the mount and 10 mins with a hydraulic press to remove and re-install the rubber insert and then another 10 to re-install, so what $20 for the mount and $340 for half hour labour??

I do jobs on the side and if you were in Melbourne I would do the whole lot for half that price, dodgy pricks.
</End Rant>
Re: Is this price crazy? (Gatesys SW20)

Hey mate
Prices seem inclusive of labour, depending upon the shop it's a fair quote

You have to remember there outsourcing most of those parts

I work in spares at toyota and would be happy to quote you very good prices on parts
Send me your vin and parts needed in a pm and ill get you good prices and even post them to you

Also if your keen
I'm doing a twos r us order so you might be able to get cheap parts from there
Happy to put your items on my order if you chip in for postage :)

Let me know mate
Sounds as tho
For next time would be wise to have it inspected for that amount of money, and in non running condition I would have hoped it was in better nick ten that :/

Re: Is this price crazy? (track_mr2)

Those prices are crazy high.
Basically the majority of your front and rear bushes are gone. If you are able to do your own work just buy a complete set of front and rear bushings and change it yourself. If you aren't able to, still buy a full set of front and rear bushings, then have a suspension shop change them, along with your shocks etc....Most of this work could be done one go. I'd change them all to polyurethane if it were my car.
Re: Is this price crazy? (worldwalker)

On the issue of fuel, I purchased an AW11 as a project, which had been purchased as a project and as a result had been sitting for well over two years with the same crappy fuel in it when the gearbox **** itself and the 4AGZE started first time. Even a high comp freshly rebuilt 4AGZE started and ran fine with the first sign of some Ultimate. Sounds like there is more than crappy fuel in there.

Get a fresh tank from a wreck. There is the odd one floating around on gumtree, chuck up a wanted ad, you'll be surprised how many back yarders have cars like these without knowing about these forums.

Nick
Re: Is this price crazy? (blacky83)

Agreed there are a couple of things that seem excessive, like the engine mount especially, but otherwise nothing screams out dodgy mechanic. Labour isn't cheap, and when there's a lot of things that need work it adds up.
That said, this list seems like everything needed to get it back to 100%. A lot of it wouldn't be absolutely necessary in the short term.

Re: Is this price crazy?
