I've been told that In the mid eighties a survey of international motoring journalists voted the X1/9 as having the best handling chassis of any production vehicle (including exotics), unfortunately I did not get the details. After nailing very tight corners at 160kph, just fighting G-force through the steering wheel... with absolutely no traction loss, I believe it.

Bertone used their knowledge from developing the first Ferrari 308 immediately prior to the X1/9, they even used some surplus parts (useless fact #347: X1/9's have Ferrari door handles).

They have a very solid chassis which was designed to take a great deal more power. They were also designed to pass proposed US crash legislation of 90mph head-on and 110mph roll-over with occupant survival (which was scrapped as only VOLVO and the X1/9 passed, not one single US car did!).

Fiat management, in their infinite wisdom, put an unimpressive, under-powered engine into this incredible chassis that Bertone designed for them, in order to save on manufacturing costs. This is the X1/9's main downfall (solution, install a Lancia 2 litre turbo). Well, that and steel from Russia... with rust.

To date, an X1/9 is the most awe inspiring drivers car I have ever driven, just for its dry tarmac handling. I love my AW11- it is faster, more nimble and more fun, but it is less stable at high speed. I would not have the confidence to hit tight corners at 130kph under hard acceleration... not even on an open-field track with no obstacles to hit.

Also I found it comfortable enough, no hacking required.
Re:MR2 magazine articles (cogs)

BUMP for anyone that didn't see these when first posted, some scans of MR2/Toyota magazine articles and ads from past years:

Added by me
Added by twomr2s

Enjoy!
Re:MR2 magazine articles (Duo-Moo-o)

This one's in a car mag I'm currently listing on ebay if anyone's interested...

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws...&item=181131207369

Features one of the first critical road tests of the SW20 as well as a used buyers guide for the AW11.

Re:MR2 magazine articles (Duo-Moo-o)

Thought there was originally a thread for old ads, but I can't seem to find it any more, so added to this one.
Re:MR2 magazine articles (artymr2)

I recall wheels did a photo shoot of "sporty" toyotas in the late 80s/early 90s, a follow on from their slogan at the time. They had some ripper action shots of Celica, Supra, Cressida, even the SV21 v6 camry!! Car Australia were a lot more kinder to the car in 94 than Car UK was with the initial 1990 release. Get the impression the writers had a grumpy day that day, and made the cover 'How Toyota Spoilt the New MR2' headline, still interesting reading though.
Re:MR2 magazine articles (cogs)

Wow, these articles have kept the server busy, glad you guys are enjoying them <img src="https://www.classic-ford.org/mr2/mr2play/upfiles/smiley/icon_smile_tongue.gif" alt="" data-smiley="" />
Also, feel free to upload any others you find to the gallery if you want. Just create an account to upload to and I can move them to the album with the others.
Re:MR2 magazine articles (darius)

Cogs i have a set as well after moving house, mostly Hot4s type but i'll scan them an upload them as well.
Re:MR2 magazine articles (artymr2)

Thanks cogs, awesome!!

I recall some of those articles. Also there were a few others I recall, like Wheels JDM Gen3 test, and ABS tests where the MR2 performed very poorly for some reason.

I will dig through my pile of mags and see if anything is there, but I think I gave them all away a while back :(

Cheers
Re:MR2 magazine articles (Duo-Moo-o)

Nice one, Cogs.
