The innards are rubber squashed between two washers. It is worth a look.
The shift stick is cable driven and can sometimes be a problem if it loosens. I assume your clutch is fully operational as a low clutch can also cause problems.
Hopefully it's only a minor problem for you.
Cheers
Re:Gearbox trouble (Engineering_guy)

Is it worth repairing?
And what are my options if i do decide to switch out the box?
There is a bloke selling a e58 with a clutch on here, does that match up?
And how about 6 speed boxs? worth it?
Sorry about being such a noob, iv tried to commit myself to reading all the forums but there is only so much time in the day.

thanks, Mat
Re:Gearbox trouble (Road and Track)

dead syncros, common problem after about 100,000-120,000 km.
used boxes are a total waste of time if someone has not driven & tested them. the story of "low km jap import" is now jsut a dream with these cars.
we have repair parts in stock
Re:Gearbox trouble (artymr2)

Is the oil fresh and the right level? Worth checking.

Cheers
Gearbox trouble (Engineering_guy)

So i made a purchase of a 87 aw11 sc from canberra on thursday, $2500

As you can imagine for that price a few things are wrong with the car, one of which is 3rd gear.
its rooted, its a #$&@ to get into, and then it wont stay there.
So, should i just throw a new box at it?
or it is something that doesnt have to require major surgery?

Help appreciated,
Thanks
Mat
