If you're handy mechanically and then a cheap one with some fixable problems is not an issue.

If you're inept with a torque wrench, then stay away from the ones which you know will need fixing.

Stay away from the cheap ones, unless you want to spend a lot more fixing things up..
gearboxes are usually another culprit, check for worn 2nd and 3rd synchros.
try to get a gen 3 turbo (93 plus)
check if the cooling system is in good working order
leaking targa tops are common.
The early models dont have the best ABS systems.

There's a lot of things to check especially as the cars are now getting old.

First things first makes sure the engine does blow excessive smoke, when cold, when warm on idle and under WOT.

I'd then check structural things like any signs of repairs, rust, does it drive straight, does it make weird noises when going over bumps etc.

Then there's quirks of MR2s to look out for e.g. does the targa roof leak, does the hand brake work etc.

I don't think you should discount modifed and engine swapped cars, provided they've been done right. Always best to find out who did the mechanical work and even have a talk to the mechanic about it. you may find they tell you things about the car that the owners may not even know.

Hey guys I'm wanting to buy an sw20 turbo and just wanted som advice on what to look for, stay away from, price I can expect for a good one, also whether I should consider an na which has been converted to turbo???? Any input would be greatly appreciated
