(MRVirgin)

That is not true. We do not have roadworthy inspections here. The vehicle will only need to be inspected if it is being transferred from interstate from a different owner.

SA is a good state to own a modified car in for this reason.

That also reminds me that touge_charmer would not need to pay stamp duty. It would probably only cost $150 to transfer the car.
Re:Buying a car in Vic then moving to Adelaide ? (nissky)

Its not simple to transfer cars with modifications.
Things like pod filters, lowered suspension, exhaust, wider wheels, will give you trouble. Depending you might even have to find stock parts to get it passed the roadworthy checks.
Re:Buying a car in Vic then moving to Adelaide ? (MRVirgin)

After three months of moving to Adelaide you must transfer your drivers license and vehicle registration over to South Australia. Plenty of people don't do this however it is not a big deal to do. I'd know, I've moved interstate four times in the last seven years.

You will need to pay stamp duty on the vehicle, some transfer fees and buy new license plates. It's really not a big deal and usually only takes half an hour total. I'm happy to assist you, I live minutes from the inspection station and have done this several times before.

Rough costs I think would be approximately $200 to transfer the vehicle over.
Re:Buying a car in Vic then moving to Adelaide ? (Touge_charmer)

Ok, thanks for the informations !

Well, the thing is I'm not really planning to get a standard. More like an old special car like aw11, 180sx or porsche 924/944
Re:Buying a car in Vic then moving to Adelaide ? (nissky)

You are suppose to change registration to the new state when you move. You can delay for a while if you have an address in the old state (like friends place). Usually by the time the next rego comes around you will change anyway.
Get a standard!, good condition car and its easy to get it changed to a new state.
Buying a car in Vic then moving to Adelaide ? (Touge_charmer)

Hey guys, it's me again aha...

Sorry for the trouble but it seems to me that the Aussie road laws are quite tricky ^^

So, I'm landing in Melbourne in 10 days because it's convenient to me (I have a friend who lives there) and I'm very likely to buy a car quickly so that i can be independant (probably not an AW11 sadly, because they are so rare and expensive...).

Now, I've heard about Adelaide and it seems like a really nice place so I might decide to move there in a couple of months once things have settled down a bit.

Then what will happen to the car ? Can i keep my Vic plates (and i guess a legal adress to go along) and drive in Adelaide for an undetermined amount of time ? Or is it mandatoty that I change the plates to SA ? If yes, how much would that roughly cost ? Are there other ways to deal with this issue ?

Thanks in advance.
