(kameleon)

That installed is almost the price of an engine rebuild, better to rebuild than pay that much (price in AUD shiped than the labour to fit it)
Re:Engine rebuild - options? (salem)

yeah the car is by no means mint. decent condition, sure. interior carpets were all replaced recently before I bought it (6 or 7 years ago?). seats are in good condition, no tears on sprung springs. gearbox recently rebuilt (last few years), new exhaust 5 or 6 years ago. the only non-engine issues are a bit of buffer work on a rear wheel arch, and one of the front wheel bearings is a little looser than I'd like, but not a worry.

I've ruled out engine rebuild now. just need to decide between engine swap and keep it, or sell as-is. also not going to do engine swap and sell.

argh, so painful to decide.
Re:Engine rebuild - options? (salem)

hmm. is this a reasonable price for a 95 turbo engine with LSD, and would it swap in easily enough into my 94 turbo currently without LSD?

http://www.rpmgarage.com/new/detail/?tid=21209

Re:Engine rebuild - options? (Tree)

I'm sorta with purple5ive here, but really depending on the overall condition of the car. If almost everything is mint except the engine then maybe worth while to drop in a bare good condition motor. These cars are still pretty awesome as you mentioned.
Otherwise the GT86 is not a bad choice, even tho the old car has character, new car will always be, well...new lol. Much less to worry about just turn it on and drive. The GT86 is actually quite similar in a few ways.
But obviously is you really love your MR2 then $$$ no obstacle. Just my 2c :)
Re:Engine rebuild - options? (kameleon)

Well i have the spares to make it a car again, so if you do decide to go that way and advertise it let me know.
Re:Engine rebuild - options? (salem)

those were just rough first guess figures. I haven't really done my research to see what it's worth.

But selling as-is is certainly something I'm looking at.

are you interested in it?

Re:Engine rebuild - options? (kameleon)

So you would sell for 6k?
Re:Engine rebuild - options? (purple5ive)

My experience from getting an engine rebuild hasnt been great, and theres been a few people in the same boat as me on here
if your going to sell the car regardless then buy a decent second hand engine and install that, then sell it
will save you a mlot of money and headaches for sure

cheers
Re:Engine rebuild - options? (salem)

I felt it would be easier to sell if it was working properly.

However, I'm not too keen on all that extra effort. Rough guessy figures were sell it for $11k running. But if it'll cost $5k to fix, and I can sell it as is for $6k, then I'd rather save myself all that running around since financially I'd be in the same position either way. I really don't want to do the figures on purchase price plus money I have sunk into it compared to sale price.....I'll just assume the enjoyment of having it for these years will compensate for that loss. The car was a bloody great drive when running.

Not keen on parting out, as that also seems like a whole lot of effort for no gain.
Re:Engine rebuild - options? (Reddtarga)

salem
But then I'd likely still want to sell the car afterwards....

Why spend money trying to fix it if you're only going to sell it afterwards?
You'd never get that money back when you sell.
Maybe better to sell as is, or part out.
Re:Engine rebuild - options? (salem)

Yeah but depending on transport costs, might make the whole exercise not worth it. anyone have any idea what it would cost to get a car transported to Sydney?

Re:Engine rebuild - options? (salem)

That sounds great, dylmrt. Except I have no idea who a reliable engine rebuilder would be in the ACT (although I have somenoe I could call), nor what parts I'd need to tailor in/out of that kit. I assume the rebuilder would pull the thing apart first and then I'd get them to order off you?

But then I'd likely still want to sell the car afterwards....

good to know though. I'll make some calls and see what I can work out.
Re:Engine rebuild - options? (dylmrt)

You don't need to spent $10k for a basic rebuild.
Our rebuild package for $1850 (at current rates) delivered to your door includes:

CP pistons (to the size you wish)
Eagle Rods
Cometic 87mm HG
ARP main and head studs
ACL bearings (main, rods & thrust)
OEM toyota water pump
OEM Toyota oil pump
OEM Toyota timing belt

We can tailor more or less parts as required.

All you'd need to do is then find an engine rebuilder to do the machining and the labour, which shouldn't cost you 8k. I'd say you could realistically pay someone $3k to do a good job, meaning a total rebuild outlay of only 1/2 what you've been quoted.
