I reckon my steering has improved since the flush and refill. I ran some anti-varnishing fluid through and drove it for a day, then drained it. The old fluid I was replacing did not look that bad. Amber, but perhaps it was more viscous than the correct stuff ?? But lots of constant correcting /wandering seems to have lessened. Still some tramlining, not related to PS.

473 should be enough. I pulled the feed/return hoses from the reservoir to flush the old stuff and filled up with one 473ml bottle, bled the system, topped up and I probably had about 20ml left

Does anyone know off the top of their head how much PS fluid you need - capacity? 473ml enough or do you need more?

I looked at the bottle at the Peugeot dealer and it didn't have the "electro-hydraulique" that I had seen online. So not being 1005 sure, I declined, went back to Toyota $49.50. Wow.
Anyway it's done. Wish I had seen your post about eBay earlier... nvm.

Seeing as we're on the topic again, I had the same issue some time ago: AMSoil power steering fluid is suitable (in fact, their tech specs stipulate it's suitable for "Toyota PSF Type EH; P/N 008886-01").

It's readily available (eBay, suppliers in Sydney) and cheap.

Used in mine, works as stated.

PSF- EH is now $49 for 1 litre at Toyota dealers, not in stock. After much googling ands several years since this thread was last active, it turns out that the french cars are going for smaller engines / reduced emissions via electro hydraulic PS pumps. Rang the nearest Peugeot dealer at Artarmon - $39 in stock. Solved.
Glad i saw this thread about electro pumps might struggle against thick /wrong fluid.

Electric motors don't pump too well when the fluid is thick as honey as most cheaper ATFs/PSFs can be when cold. You are probably looking at something that has a extremely high VI and specific viscosity. Also, since packaging constraints were there, I would think that the fluid would also have to tolerate some high temps hinting toward full synthetic (again LOW viscosity!).

If Toyota told you to put in Dextron III then they are dimwits and should just go back to selling their Camry's.

Manufacturers that use an EH system include Audi, Citroen, Ford, Mazda, Mini, Peugeot, Seat, Skoda, Suzuki, Toyota and Vauxhall....

Unfortunately, if you own an MR2 then be prepared to shell out extra $$$

Kill the motor/pump/rack by putting in ATF and I can guarantee you'd be up for more than the cost of a $30 bottle from Toyota.

um... shouldn't be what grade ATF did you use?
iv bin running just normal power-steering fluid (not ATF) its like $10 per L
as if you put the pump out it is a normal pump nothing fancy about it
however Toyota normally say "this is specially made for the imported MR2 "
like my alternator / ac compressor powers-steering relay and so on
yet my alternator without the bracket fits and came in a land-cruiser the ac compressor is from a Camry from memory
and the relay is just a normal 130 odd amp relay Toyota generally say this so they c an charge $33 for a $10 bottle lol
Toyota try never to make "custom" bits for cars it would slow the production down

also the pump is PN 44310-17010 can be replaced with 44310-17011 witch comes on a
Toyota 4Runner 1993 V8 & V6
but the Toyota stuff is pretty good PSF

I flushed out the old atf fluid last weeek and top it up with the proper steering fluid and now my steering is alot easier to steer.... I couldnt get out most of the old fluid because the atf fluid is thicker than the toyota power steering fluid...

Btw the bottle is not cheap $33! Once i received my fluid i will flush the power steering system and fill it up with the proper fluid.

I found a part number on the net and went to cmi toyota and ordered the toyota power steering EH. Its specially made for the imported MR2 SW20 Turbo.
@ Gold Ghost I tried the ATF fluid before but it made my steering heavy and my power steering pump makes grinding noises now... I hope i didnt freak it up...
Anyway here is the part Toyota Power Steering EH part no. 08886-01206.

ATF dextrin would work fine but probaly not the best
But I just use just a normal power steering fluid
cos its an electric pump runing a nomal plower steering hydraulic system

Maybe try NORTHPOINT TOYOTA. - Toyota DO make it but it probably would have to be imported from Japan (not a good time).

or I have heard you can use fluid from other car makers which use electro hydraulic power steering. Peugeot etc.

Its not the sort of fluid that genereric places like SuperCheap Auto stock as most cars use 'normal' power steering.

I have a rev 1 mr2 turbo, just wondering where you fellow mr2's buy your power steering fluid from? I know that we have to use the TOYOTA'S POWER STEERING FLUID TYPE EH.

I went to CMI TOYOTA today, and got told that toyota dont make that type of fluid, he said to just top up with an atf dextron type fluid!!!
