Update: I was able to get a letter from a Toyota dealer to confirm that my MR2 had a mechanical airbag, therefore did not require the dash light.

My inspector accepted it and I got my blue slip!

WOW!!! I hope the inspector entered that information into there database for future clients. Shouldn't have to go through all that Hassel.

Yeah you are a 400km from me. The guy who done my Blue slip was pretty good and good to deal with. Pinned me for a CAT but other than that passed me.

Thanks for the responses guys!
I spoke to a few Toyota dealers in Sydney, all the workshop/service managers basically told me that if the steering wheel has the SRS airbag symbol, it should have the airbag light.
That is just a generic statement from them, as they didn't actually check anything.
I spoke to the parts team and they actually checked the VIN and could not find details for an airbag, I did request an email from them but they have not sent one yet.
My last option is to have the inspector take off the wheel and check, but I prefer if they didn't - it will also cost some $$ for their labour.
My inspector suggested that I take my car to Toyota to have a look - but I believe they will also take off the wheel and charge me.
They already charged me $50 to clean the engine number to be visible. This is the most expensive inspection I've had yet." />

NSW blue slips seem to be quite strict.

Were you able to convince them that it doesn't need an indicator lamp for airbag ?
Possible they are confusing it between ABS or Power steering or some other bloody BS.
Also on the same subject. Be aware that the airbag IS alive and IS wired up and can hurt real bad.
My owners manual has several pages of warnings about the airbag system.
Basically, if doing any work anywhere near any of the airbag wiring, sensors etc. DISCONNECT BATTERY BEFORE you touch it !!! I've not had mine apart but I did discover one sensor (accelerometer maybe)? under dash area. There might be others ? Dunno ?

No light in instrument cluster for airbag when first turned to on position.

Very original 1998 Bathurst. I'm the second owner. Have had it for many years.

It hasn't been altered or buggered with.

I think you could be confident that there is no indicator light required.

Same as Doug mentions. I have two, 99 models both with air bags, no warning lights though. Not sure they know what they are talking about IMO.

Bathursts have no airbag connected. There is one in the wheel (as it's a generic Toyota wheel) but there's no wiring or sensors in the body, and no light on the dash.

Hi guys,
I've taken my 1998 MR2 Bathurst to get a blue slip and failed due to the missing/malfunctioning airbag indicator light and headlight aiming.
Apparently when you turn the car to acc or turn the car on, the airbag light is supposed to light up and then turn off after a few seconds when it is working.
The problem is that there is no light that comes on, I'm not even sure where the light is supposed to be. The mechanic and I had a quick look through the owner's manual and the page with the dash indicators does not have a mention for airbag.
He said he tried to contact Toyota with no luck and asked me to contact Toyota myself. I'll try to call them later during lunch as I'm at work.

Has anyone else had this issue before?
Can you confirm if the rev 5 MR2s has an airbag indicator in your car and your Owner's manual?
