I recently got to the bottom of this issue on my 93 NA. Turns out the soldering at the back of the speedo cluster was at fault. I resoldered everything in site and it came good. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Was a last ditch attempt in frustration after changing capacitors and still having the needle fluctuate like mad.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Works perfect now. Looked at each connection with a magnifying glass and found nothing. So both mechanical and electronic speedo senders (gears) should not cause any compatibility issues regardless of the inside ring colour.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;I couldn’t find the blue ring to compare to the white however from memory different mounting as in can’t be swapped (couldn’t use my old non lsd early model speedo ring with lsd diff - had to buy the white).&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Process of elimination, if you have tried, swapping the cluster, swapping the electronic speedo drive unit, tried spinning your speedo drive gear with a drill and output is consistent at a static speed, that would support the look into the gearbox.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;But if guidance. I am mid of two gearbox rebuilds (early and late boxes, new synchros, new lsd, bits and pieces), however the work is being done by someone who I hold very high as to having a professional level of knowledge, experience and skill - who also has some of the specialist tools (custom made). Forever grateful.&lt;br&gt;Personally a professional is worth the expense/importance of a good gearbox.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;With the gearbox out you might be able to inspect any broken teeth on the internal ring.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Why I am posting... Remind me / Pm me if I don’t repost, I have both mechanical and speedo drives (different ends from memory), I have both blue (early model box) and white (late model box) speedo rings (from memory they were different diameters/sat on the final drive differently so are not interchangeable). Before cracking the box and starting down the buy parts rabbit hole of rebuild let me check the parts. Again, it’s only from memory, I can check. Otherwise maybe PureMr2 also has a blue ring to compare size to. Less likely to ruin a brand new clutch and have to redo the whole lot again.&lt;br/&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br&gt;Doug, yes important not to do that.&lt;br/&gt;I don't know whether it would work with a turbo box, but when I refitted my S54&amp;nbsp; box with the engine still in the car, to get the right alignment&amp;nbsp;I maneuvered the gearbox so that one at a time I could fit 4&amp;nbsp; temporary&amp;nbsp;mounting bolts&amp;nbsp;from the gearbox to the engine that were slightly longer than stock.&amp;nbsp;&lt;br/&gt;This allowed the correct alignment with the gap between mounting flanges of the gearbox and engine large enough so that the input shaft and clutch splines were not yet engaged. I then simply slid the gearbox along the bolts till the shaft went in.&amp;nbsp;But even then of course aligning the clutch splines was still a PITA.&lt;br/&gt;But what a wonderful feeling when those flanges go together and you can refit the stock bolts.&lt;br/&gt;</description><link>https://www.classic-ford.org/mr2/mr2play/FindPost/141359</link><pubDate>Tue, 25 Dec 2018 12:15:17 GMT</pubDate></item><item><title>Re: Speedometer issue (Reddtarga)</title><description>Engine out = PITA, so just a couple of thoughts:&lt;br/&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;br/&gt;I have recently fitted a 7" Android head unit that apart from all the other stuff on it also has a good reliable installed GPS program,&amp;nbsp;and while driving I mostly have that app running so I can use the speed indication on it.&lt;br/&gt;IMO it is probably easier to read than the OEM speedo that I now hardly ever look at.&lt;br/&gt;The GPS is more accurate anyway, important when setting my cruise control so as not to exceed the speed limit in strict enforcement areas.&lt;br/&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;br/&gt;Another cheap, and simple alternative to the OEM speedo might be one of the better 'heads up units' (HUD).&lt;br/&gt;</description><link>https://www.classic-ford.org/mr2/mr2play/FindPost/141357</link><pubDate>Tue, 25 Dec 2018 11:09:40 GMT</pubDate></item><item><title>Re: Speedometer issue (Falcon)</title><description>The old mechanical cable drive seizes (usually the angle drive) and overloads the plastic gears.&lt;br/&gt;Probably damaged the plastic gear on the diff. Doesn't take much.&lt;br/&gt;Gearbox can be removed with engine in car but it's possibly better to lower engine and gearbox down to floor.&lt;br/&gt;Much easier for aligning gearbox into clutch when reassembling.
