I may retract that when something goes wrong when its back together haha
Re: Engine shut down - mechanical or electrical issue (jaycrab)

I can beat that. I've received a $2.5k bill for an electrical fault on an Alfa, that wasn't properly fixed.
I'm not too concerned about cost on this. From memory my clutch job was 4hrs labour which I think is pretty reasonable.

I like to DIY where I can but don't mind spending money to fix things that need fixing.
Re: Engine shut down - mechanical or electrical issue (Kook)

Cool, I remember when I bought my MR2 I had a heater hose leaking. Took it to a local "performance mechanic" who was highly recommended to me. He charged me $800 for time spent taking out the fuel tank and couldnt even fix it.

Now that I've done it myself I have no clue why he pulled the tank out in the first place and even then $800 in madness. And this was close to 10 years ago so he would probably charge more now! Needless to say I've never been back haha.

But yeah, if he knows his MR2s you'll be fine I reckon. Having a hoist would make it a LOT easier too.
Re: Engine shut down - mechanical or electrical issue (jaycrab)

Deevon
Out of curiosity, what is he charging you to do it? If you don't mind me asking.

Not sure yet. I'll PM when I get the bill. He's doing a few other jobs for me so probably a couple hrs labor and time to diagnose. He knows MR2s well and does good work. It's done properly with inline fuses and not currently connected so no big deal.

The capacitors in the ECU don't have any signs of failure.

I think at this stage I'll rule out an ECU issue. I'm betting it will be the ignitor or something spark related.
Re: Engine shut down - mechanical or electrical issue (jaycrab)

Prelim results are in:

- I could hear the fuel pump when jumping FP and B+ in the diagnostic port
- There was 11v at the grey ashtray fuel pump coupling when cranking

So i guess this rules out a fuel issue? It was stalling at around 1,500 rpm so the pump wasn't under load at the time, and everything seams to be powering properly.

I also checked the cold start sensor. BGB provides two tests.
1. Resistance of 70 - 90 ohm between the two terminals. Mine scored 77ish
2. Resistance of 30 - 90 ohm between STA(?) and ground. One of the terminals to ground was 147, and the other was 75. I'm not sure which is which so this could either be a pass or fail. I'll get a second opinion on this one.

I haven't checked the ECU yet but I'll take a look this weekend. At this stage I'm thinking it's ignitor, distributor, or ecu.

thanks for the help so far
Re: Engine shut down - mechanical or electrical issue (jaycrab)

Thanks I'll take a look at the ecu
Re: Engine shut down - mechanical or electrical issue (92 Hard Top)

I will put money on it. It's the ECU.
