This BEAMS engine 1998 5 speed manual with 87K km would be $13558 US landed in Australia, don't know how much longer these really good MR2's will be available from Japan.

Thanks whitchy, I hadn't caught up with the latest news.
I did notice that they that have changed the rules on importing rare & special cars but have stopped short on allowing private imports of one new car every 12 months. That was the proposed new rule put to them but it's not going to happen.

They are changing them dude! Starting in 2019 there is a rolling 25 year rule, so in 2019 you can bring in a 1994 car, by 2024 you can bring in 1999 SW20s! :)

A 1998 automatic with beams engine US$8,777 landed Port Kembla, only 84k kms. looks to be in excellent condition.
Why cant the government change the rules to allow imports of older cars like these, now there is no domestic car manufacturing industry to protect. Just who is being protected by the current rules?

If you are referring to the top photo it's not a Gen 2 lights.

It can not be imported unless it was owned over sea for two years. It was the year 1992 that was last option to import JDM mr2 into Aust. That why you don't see gen 3 JDM models, unless it was a private import or a track car.

As far as I know these current import laws were created to protect the domestic vehicle production market, so why do we still have them?

Also, one of my friends just imported a 1989 Mazda RX7 Turbo (which is also not in the list).

Your friends 1989 car would be eligible as it is greater than 25 years old.
