Well I got the new ATS knock sensor and installed it. Cleared the code and set the boost to max 15psi... Issue was some what resolved but still had hesitation but would occur if I push it hard... Checked the code again and this time it was 32 which was the AFM... Big thanks to Carmikey for selling me the AFM and posting out so quickly. Installed it and now the car is smooth as a babies bum... loving life again :)
Re: Really bad hesitation, bogging on boost (mr2y)

I fixed my problem, it was dodgy wiring with an old school piggy back FCON ECU. I deleted it and the car runs fine now. Checked the chips inside it, manufactured 1991... old school :)
Re: Really bad hesitation, bogging on boost (mr2y)

I have the same symptoms and code 52, short or open circuit on knock sensor. But mine is more intermittent, is it possible that it's something to do with the EGR? I can see some of my vacuum hoses are flapping in the breeze and I think some of the EGR hoses are blocked off.
Re: Really bad hesitation, bogging on boost (petmr2)

thanks man... Yeah I also use 98...
Re: Really bad hesitation, bogging on boost (Mrskylighter)

petmr2
Yeah I've done some research on this. Some people have done some test with the ats knock sensor and they said it picks up the right frequency so should work fine... I've also read people installing several oem sensors and it keeps blowning... so hard to know which 1 is the right one to go with

The right one to go with is the correct Toyota one but they cost heaps and like you said can break easily. See how you go with the ATS one. Just run good fuel in case it's not as sensitive in detecting detonation.
Re: Really bad hesitation, bogging on boost (petmr2)

Yeah I've done some research on this. I've read many people using it with good feedback

ATS have a good rep and make excellent products. Their knock sensor seems to work great for people who had dodgy knock sensors because the ATS doesn't pick up any knock so doesn't retard the Ig or set a code.

That is my understanding of how it works from what I've read. Have not tried one personally.
Re: Really bad hesitation, bogging on boost (petmr2)

Ok I installed the missing globe for the engine light an ran diagnostics and yep it's code 52. Fingers crossed the knock sensor fixes the issue and its not wiring

Re: Really bad hesitation, bogging on boost (petmr2)

No issues with starting... drives fine under 3000 rpm... above that it starts to start, bogs etc.

I thought ATS had a good rep? Do you have issues starting it sometimes?
I had a similar issue with my 91 Turbo, it turned out the main power wire to the rear fuse box had corroded at a factory splice point. I had a spare Gen 3 loom from a 94 Turbo, when I stripped that down to poach the main power wires it seemed to be sealed up much better than the 91 loom, so if yours is a Gen3 this might be of no assistance.
http://www.mr2australia.com/mr2play/tm.aspx?m=121791
Easy enough to confirm, just remove the 15A EFI fuse and stick the multi meter probe in pin 2 which should be the one closest to the ignition main relay, even if it gives a good reading try jiggling the wiring around from where it splits off to the engine bay temp sensor.
Good luck!
Re: Really bad hesitation, bogging on boost (kojab)

petmr2
Thanks guys... taking the cluster out was a pain in the ass but it's on my list to do... I've done a lot of research and I think it's the knock sensor... fuel issue did cross my mind... I've taken the plunge and ordered the ATS knock sensor... I think I'm stuck in limp mode... If it doesn't work then I'll take out the cluster over Christmas and source the engine light connector and globe.

Big mistake to use the ATS knock sensor if you are still running the factory Toyota ecu. If ATS is still supplying the GM knock sensor as replacement it is not compatible with the Toyota ecu. I have done some considerable testing on both sensors and the are very different in many ways.
Re: Really bad hesitation, bogging on boost (petmr2)

On another note, I read that you can tell if the knock sensor is blown if you take it off and give it a shake... if it sounds like a blown light bulb then it's blown. I think I'll get under the car after work and see if I can take it off and have a listen

Re: Really bad hesitation, bogging on boost (petmr2)

Thanks guys... taking the cluster out was a pain in the ass but it's on my list to do... Blocked filter or faulty fuel regulator.
Maybe fuel cut from boost spikes if the waste gate isn't opening properly? That would be quite sudden though-doesn't sound like that.

Usually electrical gives misfiring.

Faulty sensor signals can engage "limp mode". That's very possible. Eliminate those (fix em) first and check ya fuel pressure I reckon
Re: Really bad hesitation, bogging on boost (just_ace)

Yeh, get globe and pull codes. Def could be knock sensor. Gen2 or 3? Could also be afm, or a leak between afm and turbo.
