Tell Dennis Aaron Treay sent you. He knows his way round my MR2's. He took care of my recent engine build organising the forged bottom end etc.

I'm picky as I've found Newcastle is full of guys who know exactly 7/10's of sweet FA. I've had so much work carried out around Newcastle and have found myself rarely happy. One mechanic actually blew up a brand new engine in my 65 falcon. Another mechanic I took my Corvette to cracked my front bumper but tried to hide it from me thinking I wouldn't notice. the freight on the front bumper is more bloody expensive than the front bumper!.

Anywho. Dennis has experience working on my last 2 MR2's. He bends over backward and if he identifies issues I have found, he tends to ring me and get permission to get them sorted (like my alternater had issues. He rang me and ended up getting a sparky to come out bring a new unit which Dennis sourced and fit it up, I still picked my car up on the original agreed time)

His prices are nice too. I think what makes him good is his love of left field cars. if you go there check out his turbo V8 BMW Z3!.

Thanks for the tips Nik and Shaz, I called Monaco and the guy pretty much heard MR2 and said not interested. I'm not really digging Streamline Automotive, it looks like they only work on commodores and FR cars. I tried calling Charlestown steering but Stu wasn't available.
The guys at Newcastle Gearbox and Diffs will take on the job, the guy I spoke to has done one before. I'll try and call Charlestown steering again tomorrow and see how Stu's price compares.
I feel like by the time this is done it would almost be more economical to just buy myself a hoist! :(

The guys at Charlestown Steering are always good. Very reasonably priced too. I know mine's NA, so a bit different, but they've had the gearbox out & I've never had any trouble.
He said they could be interested, but would prefer to see the car first before giving a definite yes or no.

One place that probably could do it is Monaco performance in Kotara but I have found them to be exceptionally expensive. Another place that may be worth inquiring with is Streamline Automotive at 183 Macquarie Rd, Warners Bay, just bear in mind these guys are usually booked fairly solid.

Hi all,

Can anyone recommend a mechanic in Newcastle with MR2 experience to swap my crunchy Gen2 box with a Gen3? I have all the parts required for the swap, I just don't have anywhere to work on my car safely! (That's my excuse anyway, I've had the box ready to go for about 3 years now...)
