The aw11 rack off the top of my head is sub 700mm long. Ae86 manual racks are the same housing width and diameter, but the pinion shaft is a little bit long or shorter (cant remember which way tho.)

I really do not know as I have not seen a AW11 rack. Once I can get my hands on one, I can see what needs to be done. Since I have fitted a Toyota Echo steering column, adding a different rack should not be a major hurdle.

Hey Steve, I have a couple of racks if you are after one.
In Adelaide though, let me know if you get stuck.

Sounds great. Can you send one over? I will PM address.

Cheers
Re: Steering rack conversion (Carmikey)

B24

MCT_MR2
Won't an aw11 rack be too short?? I wished I had gotten one the the pinions which would reduce turns to the likes of my 86.
Re: Steering rack conversion (B24)

Thanks MCT, I will ask a few people up here about the pinion.

If I had a AW rack, I could see what's involved but I don't have one available so just need some feedback. Also, the AW has an off the shelf quick-rack by quaife which is a big plus.

The only reason I am looking at this is my concern with the keeping the car in a straight line as its not very often the wheel is ever pointed in the right direction and I am not the greatest at spinning and catching the wheel. I really noticed this when driving the FWD cars in the rain then driving a MX5 in the rain which had a quick rack. The MX5 was so much easier to control and manage steering with less turns than the FWD cars. It was far easier to centre the wheel than the FWD and my car so it would be great to have he same characteristics with my MR2.

Trav: So am I.

Re: Steering rack conversion (kameleon)

Interested to see where this goes Steve
Re: Steering rack conversion (MCT_MR2)

http://www.mr2australia.com/mr2play/m/tm.aspx?m=53795

Theres the thread, starting back in 2011

Re: Steering rack conversion (MCT_MR2)

I remember james (toten) looking into getting quick rack and pinions done, as I believe someone makes them in lhd configuration.

Otherwise if it is a manual rack, and not a p/s rack, there are a few companies around that could cut you a custom ratio manual rack.

Steering rack conversion (B24)

I am looking at improving the ratio on the SW20. As the AW/AE86 has a quick rack, I would like to know if anyone has successfully fitted this rack to a SW20.
