RED SMT LIGHT ON DASHBOARD (MR2 newbee)

I recently purchased a 2001 MR2 Spyder with only 33,000ks on the clock. Last Sunday I had the red SMT light come on the dashboard. I noticed about three occassions in the last month when I put it into reverse it did not lock into the gear and then last Sunday the Red SMT light came on. It was driving in the forward 5 gears fine when I took it into the garage.

The garage did diagnostics on it and say the following codes come up: P1880 and P1781

I am being told I need to replace the assembly pump and gear shift lever switch. Can anyone guide me as to pricing of these parts? I am being quoted a lot of money for parts and repair.

Love my car, but in three months such serious issues - not happy! I had a 1990 MR2 full manual and did not have a single day's trouble. This one, I LOVE IT, but I need help!!

Can someone help/guide/advice?
Also, anyone heard of HiTech Auto Electricals in Sydney? Are they reliable? Good? Any help would be gladly received... I am new to this site as well... so not sure what I can/can't do here yet...

Cheers
