Thats pretty decent coin. A set of cams are about $600, same for pistons. Fit some eagle rods for lighter internals only $350ish alongwith a lightened flywherl and exeddy hd clutch.

For pistons you could fit the gen3 ones for a small bump in cr.

Hit up gorilla inds or road and track (both forum sponsors? ) for prices on the above along with the oem toyota parts you will need like water and oil pumps, gasket kit, timing belt tensioner and idler bearings etc.

Re: 3SGE 02/90 Rebuild needs help (Eric)

I belive that 3SGTE clutch and flywheel is bigger. Theres not much performance wise that can be done to the 3sge without spending big bucks. Like Dennis said a nice exhaust and high flow cat

Re: 3SGE 02/90 Rebuild needs help (cococolosus)

Thanks for the response.
Water pump, and timing belt already on my list. They are to cheap not to replace.
The block will be sent off for a chemi-clean, and I will probably replace the radiator just to be safe.
The flywheel has been attacked, none to nicely, with a grinding wheel at some point. As such, it has gouges close to 1mm deep in some places. Tossing up whether a resurface is worth it. Needless to say clutch will be replaced aswell.
I see kits and such for 3SGTE and am curious if they are compatible ?

Re: 3SGE 02/90 Rebuild needs help (dennis the menace)

StopLeak? Stop Flow more like it. Once the motor and box are out, I'd be doing a garden hose cooling system flush, perhaps even removing the radiator and having it checked. While it's apart check the clutch/flywheel (of course).

Is there any history on the vehicles servicing? How long ago was the timing belt done? If there are already issues within the cooling system it's probably false economy NOT to replace the water pump.

As far as budget tuning goes, a tidy up of the head while it's being done would be reasonable. A good way of having more fun on the road is to focus on the handling - replace all the suspension bushes (TwosRUs do an amazing full kit for a surprisingly small cost), and make sure you've got good tyres and a spot on alignment.

Don't be tempted to remove the standard intake piping and throw a podfilter on it - other people have tried it, only to find that Toyota did actually now what they were doing and the standard system really works!

Perhaps check the catalytic convertor? A good hi-flow cat and exhaust system isn't overly expensive, and should show good gains without being un-neighbourly as far as decibels.
3SGE 02/90 Rebuild needs help (cococolosus)

Hi there.
My nephews SW20 engine (non-turbo) has just landed in my back yard.
It has a spun main, chunks of stop-leak sitting in the water housings, and buckets of sloppy silicon splodges from the sump gasket and other seals that have seen some work.
In short... an unhappy critter.
I am unfamiliar with the model quirks and such so am kindly asking for some advice and direction.
Looking at a complete strip and rebuild replacing everything except the major components.
Any insight into what to watch for on this model engine, or best place to source quality parts etc would be appreciated.
Also, he would like to give it a little more zoom-zoom. What do you experts recommend without spending $1000's.
Budget I have to work with is around $3k just for parts.
Vin: JT763SW2000######
Eng: 3S9087###
Cheers !!
