I've ordered the speedo sensor and all the other parts required to swap it into my car from Road & Track. I've been told they have to order some parts from Japan or something of the sort. I sent them a deposit so they will go through and do so and haven't heard back from them since. Don't know what's going on there, honestly feel a little ignored. So, all i am waiting on now is for the part to be delivered and a set of turbo shifter cables. Again, if anyone has the part or knows of anyone who is selling this part please send them my way. It will be greatly appreciated. Once it all arrives I'm ripping into it. I am dying to see it drive.
Thanks for the help so far. It has helped me a lot.

Cayn.
Re: Adaptability of E153 gearbox's (artymr2)

Sorry not sure re starter motor, I am sure someone will chime in soon with info.

Agree re the cables , just saying if you can't find any now you can always replace them later but use the car in the meantime.

Cheers

Re: Adaptability of E153 gearbox's (Cayn V6SW20)

Hey Arty

Thanks for that bit of info. I think I will go with the turbo shifter cables, I've seen them for sale on here for $40 and I've also heard of people struggling to get into certain gears if they don't. Do you know if the starter motors are any different? I couldn't imagine they would be, but I've been told so.
Also, if anyone if you or anyone else knows of anyone who is selling those parts can you please let me know.
Thanks for the quick response.
Re: Adaptability of E153 gearbox's (artymr2)

The speedo sensor is different between the NA and turbo boxes.

The NA cables can work on the turbo boxes but your gear stick position will be non central.

Cheers

Re: Adaptability of E153 gearbox's (Cayn V6SW20)

Hey Guys,
just an update on my situation. I have finally bought the gearbox I've been wanting with all the matching shafts, hubs and gearbox mounts. I've finished UNI for the year and finally have the time to do the conversion. The only problem being I'm still short just a few small parts. I still need the turbo model linkage cables, apparantly a new starter motor and a e153 speedo sensor. I've been told the speedo sensor and starter motor from my current gearbox wont work in the turbo box, can someone please confirm this for me?
Look forward to hearing back, thanks again.

Cayn.
Re: Adaptability of E153 gearbox's (Knightrous)

If you buy the celica box, buy a cheap, broken SW20 E153 gearbox and do the center housing swap (correcting the shifter placement). I recently picked up a broken box for $50, which I will use to swap the center housing with a Camry gearbox I picked up for $100 :)
Re: Adaptability of E153 gearbox's (Cayn V6SW20)

Appreciate the offer, but I just want something heavy duty that wont fail on me. I plan on tracking the car and enjoying the streets a little more than I should, so I think the reliability of the turbo box is something I'll need. I also plan on tuning the engine in the future, so it just makes sense for me to get the best option the first time round. I've contacted the guy with the gumtree add that was previously posted. I'm 99% likely going to buy that box. Just going to need LSD shafts, turbo hubs and turbo gear linkages next.
Thanks guys :)
Re: Adaptability of E153 gearbox's (Knightrous)

Cayn V6SW20
I have a 1MZ conversion at the moment. I've been told many times that the torque of the V6 is to much for the NA box.

I know this is a debatable subject, but in the UK there are a good amount of 3VZ, 1MZ (including supercharged) & 2GR (Paul Woods!) conversions running the S54 NA gearbox without problems.. It's all about how you drive them, if your going to be dumping the clutch and doing one wheels skidders everywhere, they will explode pretty quick.

If you looking for a cheap S54 gearbox (just needs a diff) to get yours back on the road ASAP, shoot me a PM.
Re: Adaptability of E153 gearbox's (Cayn V6SW20)

I have a 1MZ conversion at the moment. I would just find a decent NA box to put back in, they are normally very cheap. If you have an NA engine, the boxes are long lasting with proper maintenance. Some even run the 3SGTE with the NA box with success ( no clutch dumps etc).

Otherwise you will need shafts and hubs also, and on an NA I think it's a bit of overkill.

Cheers

Re: Adaptability of E153 gearbox's (Mrskylighter)

Why not try contacting to gumtree seller of the gen3 angine & box I linked earlier to see if you can get into contact with the person who bought the engine?
I wouldn't worry about the Celica gearbox comment in the ad because when I spoke to the guy about buying it he didn't really know what he was talking about spec wise of the engine. Said it had twin wastegates and a big factory turbo :)
I'd say it was an MR2 box.
Re: Adaptability of E153 gearbox's (Cayn V6SW20)

That's the exact one I'm looking at. I am still considering getting the Celica box. I was going to call around a few local gearbox specialists today to see if I could get a quote on the job before I go and purchase one. I'm told it's not an expensive thing to do so it could be a possibility. My gearbox is beyond repair. it's a standard 1990 NA mr2 box that's blown to pieces and sounds like a bag of marbles if you can manage to get the car to move slightly. I want the reliability of a turbo box. My dream situation would be to find someone selling a complete set of parts required to convert it from the NA box to a Turbo box, but have had no luck finding such a thing, or to be able to afford one.
I am currently looking at two gearboxes. one is a LSD box that was from an mr2 but was converted for a celica in Sydney which after freight will cost me $700. the other is a celica box that comes with mr2 drive shafts and cross member in Brisbane which I can pick up for $500. Either way both will need some modification to fit my car, and I was told by the fellow in Sydney it only cost him $30 to convert the mr2 box to a celica, so I'm wondering if that's all it should cost to convert a celica box for a mr2.
Again, any advice any of you may have or opinions on which path to take would be appreciated.

Thanks.
Cayn.
Re: Adaptability of E153 gearbox's (Road and Track)

why dont you just fix the MR2 box you have?? we have done heaps of them

if you want to buy another box, be aware the camry V6 ones have some different ratios.

running longer cables rather than modifying the camry selectors, is a dumb idea

it is very hard to buy a genuine good condition MR2 turbo box. unless you can test drive it before it comes out, assume any pre 94 box will crunch going into second. the later boxes are a bit better, but cost a lot more to repair if they happen to have poor syncros

we have done the camry to MR2 shifter conversion. call me if interested
