Wiring Diagram?
Been a long time between posts but I am pushing on with the Mk2 with some energy now. I am trying to get the wiring re-installed. I have a few harnesses here. The original main harness was ****ised so I have a couple of better ones. Problem is the rear harness has a different connector to the main loom. Is it possible to splice in a matching connector? Wires are different colours of course. Gregorys manual is useless...anyone have an alternative they can share?

Hey mate good to see you back and nice to hear the cars coming along. I've got a couple of factory Ford manuals here, the wire colours to the rear loom seem to change over the years, assuming this is the bit you want, its the plug to the rear loom, let me know if I've got my wires crossed (couldn't help the pun ) and I'll get any other pics you may need. Tried to take a shot of the whole diagram but even with the SLR camera there was no chance of it being legible. Early manual. 1977 onwards 1979 onwards

That's fantastic Drewdog! Thanks so much :-) I have just bought a Haynes manual, when that arrives I'll have another look, but what you have sent above will help I'm sure. I have a 1978 and a few looms to choose from. It seem some of the looms have different connectors at this junction and behind the dashboard. The car itself just needs the wiring installed, carpets, new front seats, engine and gearbox installed and it's a goer. So about 2029 at this rate!

Appreciate your input @Deano. The pdf has EFI circuits? So far none of the diagrams supplied match what I have :-( I reckon my dilemma is the two rear harness's I have. The rear harness that matches the Gregory's does not mate with the front engine/dash harness (which does match the Gregory's and I have managed to install and connect most of it to gauges, ignition etc.). I think I'll run with the current engine/dash harness and join the matching rear harness (which does not match the Gregory's wire colours at the tail lights) and then buzz these connections out when I have some power back there. Can't be too difficult adapting the harnesses in the boot section. Out of interest- the two rear harnesses are quite different in the boot section. The "wrong" one is neater in that it comes through the rear firewall and goes to the LH tail light, then through the rear scuttle to the RH tail light powering the number plate lights on the way past. There's a section from there that I think is the boot light. The "correct" harness comes into the boot and splits to LH Tail light, then a long section at the split heads over the top of the boot (I presume) to the RH tail light, powering the boot light on the way through. There is a heavier twin wire around that section that I don't know what it does yet. Worst part of the build yet! I have ordered a Haynes Manual to see what confusion that brings!

I have a couple of old looms as well and have had issues trying to mate them. Best thing to do is get a genuine Ford service manual like Drew and Deano have taken pics of and do your best to follow those lines. I find a good straight edge helps. Also, lay the looms out on a large flat surface and do some continuity testing and that way you can label each wire in one loom to the corresponding wire in the other. Don't know how much time or money you want to invest but there are generic looms and aftermarket Escort ones available.

Thanks @MarkA, i reckon continuity testing the rear loom will get me out of trouble. The more I look at the diagrams, looms and individual parts, the more it makes sense.

There are various manuals in PDF format around the traps, if you want to hunt. This a a particulary good one I found, as it covers full dissasembly, not just servicing stuff, and has lots of pics. It's from 75 on, but doesnt have some specific 2L stuff, so good for body, heater, diff, etc as it goes into detail. Like setting pinion backlash. Biggest problem is the size, even PFD its 133Mb. I printed one out and bound it, and gets used more that the normal gregories.

I'm thinking chilli has a early mk2 rear loom and a late mk2 loom with his complaining (not really mate) that one goes down the left side and the other to the right. The two plugs right at the back are possibly for the number plate lamps. Best way to test the loom is lay it on a board and power it up, test light or use actual parts like switches, dash, taillights etc if it makes things easier.. Good luck with it, I hate wiring, would rather weld in 45deg heat than electrics...

Thanks for the link Deano- GOLD. Marty, I have come to that conclusion too. I like the routing of the older loom better TBH. I'll power up the rear and buzz out the connections. Feeling inspired if not capable ;-)
