Pinto rear crank seal replacement.

Hey guys just wondering if you can just slide the crankshaft seal out and push another in. Or do you have to remove the sump and remove the cap that sits under the seal to be able to replace it. Thanks guys

    RE THE PINTO........I'm sorry to have to tell you it's the hardest scenario.......without experience, you run the risk of Clutch and or Transmission Damage if you don't remove Tranny first and try the following while Eng is fully connected to Tranny......Sump off and loosen ALL Mains Caps by at least one thread. Remove Rear Main Cap completely and try pushing the top half "seal" around till it pokes out other side. Try pulling with Pliers to extract top half seal (Mechanic use a device called "Sneaky Pete" which is like wire that goes around till it shows at other end, grabs the half seal and pulls it out.
    It's not enough to put in a new Seal...........strict Installation procedures must be followed or new seal will leak just as bad as the old one in no time.
     
    I thank Lady Luck that EnFo enlisted Euro Engineers to design my Essex V6 which had a sensible full one piece modern Oil Seal that all modern cars have today, as this poor design in the Pinto would drive me nuts. I've put up with this in early Holdens and Fords for long enough.
     
    What drugs were they on back in those "old days" when they invented the full one piece seal for the front, but decided to hell with the rear ???????

    Ok fair enough well now to getting the sump off without having to remove the engine another fun task.

    The Pinto has a full seal so the can be removed with a suitable tool once the flywheel and sandwich plate have been removed from the engine without touching the sump and main cap. Check the seal running surface on the crank for excessive wear before fitting the new seal.
    If the engine in an Escort I find it easier to remove the engine and transmission together, I would then consider if the sump gasket needs replacing at the same time.

    Hello there, I tried replacing the seal with the sump on but it was super tight and I couldn't push the new one in. I was reading what other people have been doing to replace the seal and they have been removing the sump taking the end cap off and replacing the seal like that. Would you recommend doing it that way or try pushing it in thanks.

    As Blue 74 says, you don't have to remove the sump on a Pinto.The seal is one piece, & should be tight.
    You need a large socket or pipe near the size of the seal outside diameter, & tap in squarely with a hammer.
    If you don't have something suitable, go to Bunnings & search thru' their plastic or steel plumbing fittings. A block of wood across the end helps if you want to hammer in the centre.
