Removing type9
what's going to be the easiest way to get to the clutch on a mk2 with a type 9 fitted in a manual tunnel. Should I just drop the whole lot including crossmember or will there be enough room to tilt the motor back a bit and get at it that way? Cheers for your help.

All depends if you have the auto tunnel space to easy remove T9. I do it by lifting the 2ltr with box out using a crane, seems lots easier than crawling under the car for ages. Last time i had to change a rear seal and clutch i had it all out in 2hrs, back in and running in 5hrs!

Sounds good  I cant think of any reason while the manual tunnel will stop me doing that.

I just did this in my MK2 last week
i bought 4 x 3/8 unf about 150mm long bolts and replaced the cross member bolts and used them as a guide then lowerd the engin as far down as i could with a jack. bolted the gearbox up the jacked it back up!

I second what Stuart said. I had "specialist" replace my clutch up here and they didn't lower the engine. Ended up with a bent input shaft where some idiot forced the issue.

I do this as well. Rememember to disconnect steering shaft from the rack... and it helps to take the rocker cover off to allow the engine to tilt back further. Makes it easier to drop the box off !

If you ever get the chance do replace the trans tunnel. My mk2 was a manual car but i'd say late 80s/early 90s the owner decided to put a type 9 in there while they rebuilt it and widened the tunnel to suit. The tunnel is large enough that it only took 1hr 45's at a workshop to remove the shagged type 9, swap bell housings/clutch and bolt in the new type 9
The space in the tunnel makes a hell of a difference

Got it all out by dropping the crossmeber was pretty painless. I found out I have 3 different bolt types holding it in though[B)]. It also wasn't a clutch issue like I thought though. It was this  Cheers for the help

That was a working clutch fork and release bearing till the carrier decided to melt leading to the bearing cutting into the fork.

Santa, Dood i have had the exact same thing happen to me, And i'm sure plenty of others have too, using the nylon carrier thrust bearing. It happens because the thrust bearing is spinning constantly, which heats up the nylon to melting point and does even more damage when you push the clutch pedal (because you don't realise it's happening until you push the pedal). Once it's all back together, get a sturdy spring about, 150mm long(i think the one i used is out of a car seat) hook one end into the hole, in the clutch fork, where the cluch cable goes through and hold the spring up, facing aft(toward the back of the car). Drill a small hole in your floor about 10-15 mm further aft than the spring end is. It's easier to now remove the spring and hook it into the floor first then the fork second. This will now pull the thrust bearing away from the fingers on the pressure plate. You may need to do some adjusting here and there with the clutch cable and spring ends but you'll get it. Sorry i can't take any photo's for you right now coz i'm at work, on the ship. I'll be home in a month so if you cant't find a suitable spring i'm sure i have another one there I hope this helps and Good luck, Cheers, Richo
