Mk1 6 dial temp gauge

I have a 6 dial dash abd the temp gauge doesnt read at all untill the engine is very hot an then only reads around 50%. Im running a 2lt and have chandes the sender unit with the spare 2lt ebgine ubit i have. Could it be the ohms range is wrong ? cheers Ian..
