Alternater/tachometer

Hi guys. 2 small issues I hope. 80 mk2 1600 p/van. 1. Alternater is burning cable that goes to battery. Wiring loom unmolested. 2. Connected tachometer to coil, no movement. Tried both - and + Any help would be appreciated...
