They masked off all the external threads but missed a few of the internal ones, like the three for the backing plate on the strut will need a clean before they go in, not a massive issue though as I wont be running a backplate .

Got a bit more garage time today, the rear suspension is now starting to go back together and the car is off the trolley and back on jack stands.

Tell you what though, Getting those upper rear shackle bushes in was a pain in the backside. Then when fitting the shackles themselves they fought me like two cats in a burlap sack - I'm glad they were powder coated because honestly if I had spray painted them they would have been scratched to all heck.

Also - in my infinite wisdom I think my bump stops got turfed out... I looked all over and for the life of me I can't find them, I am going to do one more search tomorrow so hopefully they turn up. If they're anywhere they will be with my old U bolts which haven't shown up either.

Jobs this weekend include finding the bump stops and painting them once I do, getting the axles cleaned up and back together with new bearings and chopping the u bolts to size.

I'm contemplating cutting off the hoop on the back of the diff because its surplus to requirements. Should be easy enough to do in place.

As always couldn't leave well enough alone and gave the garage another pass, found them in with the window regulators .

Yep, sometimes you just need to step back and let the brain cells get dialled in and you'll find what you're looking for. I used to cut the top dome off the bump stop to allow some more travel. Also using panelvan bumps and shave them down as they are solid square rubber blocks. When are you getting the LSD unit?

Diff center is on order Marty, got a blackline helical and they said I should have it early next month. I have the rebuild kit sitting on the bench waiting for it.

Got cracking on today and the car is now off the trolley and on stands. It was a bit sketchy getting the car off it without a hoist.. had to do the good ole leg press under the car to lift it up a bit while my dad positioned the axle stands . Lucky it weighs next to nothing!

The diff housing completely buttoned up now and wont be coming back out unless something dire happens.

Also Marty you must be clairvoyant because that was exactly my plan with the bump stops. Hacked the top dome off and gave them a clean up then coated with raptor so they don't look shabby.

You'll see in this shot the tramp rod bolt isn't in yet, the suspension will need to be at ride height for the bolts to go through nicely and that will be them buttoned up too. The drivers side tramp rod needed a little tweak as it was 5ish degrees off horizonal - nothing some heat and a twist in the vice couldn't solve.

And like always, it wouldn't be a proper day working on a car if there wasn't a completely avoidable mistake that leaves you fuming. So I was re-assembling the axles and I had one side done and one to go. Things were going smoothly. I put it in the vise to spot weld the retaining ring to the axle like this.

And in a moment of complete bone headedness I lined up the welder and hit the trigger.... and welded the ring to the bearing . What a great idea that was! 50 bucks down the drain and now I need to pick up another new bearing next week.

Accidents happen quick draw!
Don't they use a circlip to hold the retaining ring?

Interference fit using a press, tho a good tack will lock it in place goodly, added security.
Part Time, I think my MK2 went thru a few housings in the days of loon driving, I did cut the dome off and then threw them away.
$50 for a bearing! Yikes , mine will come from Rock Auto four about $8.50 as long as they are same in Capri mk1, tho they might have totally different diffs in USA.
You can put the bolt in, just not tighten up.
Don't forget to green paint pen the bolts and nuts once torqued up for that concourse effect 😎

I had a look for the bearing on rock auto and I think it is the same, problem is it's now listing out of stock! You may have snapped up the last ones they had.
