I've been building a CNC machine on and off as parts arrive , it should be fully made built by the weekend but not operating. In between that and other minor projects etc, I moved to the mk1 escort coup and remembered the hinges are not lined up causing the doors to bind and be misaligned. With a couple of leftover 8mm stainless rods I made pins for the hinges welding nuts to one end. I also have some 8mm rod that's full length for top and bottom hinges to check it's alignment between each other. Replacement hinge pins I use are new Holden VT to VZ door pins, they are better than escort ones and have a bell shape at one end to help removal plus they are galvanized for long life.

Nice, I've read somewhere (maybe here) that the holden door pins are good replacements for the escort ones. Would be good to see the photos when you have it fitted up.

Yeah it was here you read and was me that discovered it some 20yrs ago . I've fitted them to every car I've built since then.

Been waiting for some panels to arrive to just about finish the cnc I'm building so I moved to the mk1 project today.I hadn't done much bodywork on it for months, been sidetracked with other projects.
I bought a hand sander that uses 5in Velcro pads after seeing it work on Dave's Garage vid a few weeks ago so thought it can't be bad , it works quite good and is very forgiving when you encounter edges. Anyway here's a couple of pics after a couple of hours sanding. I'll be hitting it with another layer of 2pk primer filler which will be the final coat before the colour.
The red patches are the old fashioned knifing putty , no mixing just apply and wait for it to set. Yellow is rattle can primer to cover the bare metal .

Maybe more updates coming more frequently soon!

Just a small update here, I'm working on the front panel right now so I can get the car in epoxy primer filler for it's final layer before paint, though that won't be for a while till I have made the drivers guard. There's not a lot of people that spray paint their own projects on here, bit this might be of use if need to one day or are renovating the house and need drop sheets on the projects.
I got this plastic roll from AliExpress at about $4 which comes taped and the drop size I chose is 1800mm , the length of the roll is about 20m so plenty to cover what ever your project.

This is only to cover the underside from overspray , I'll do a proper job once it's colour time.
If the front panel happens quickly I'll also do the engine bay as that's been something I want done, kind of a milestone in progress

Front panel is just about there, I've moved onto the engine bay now which could take a day or so as need to cut holes for future oil cooler pipes in the rad support side panels .

The plastic film is pretty good Marty as it gets a static charge. I find that it can purge dried overspray (flakes off) when doing the next coats because it flaps around in the spray mist. Time consuming but worth re-masking if this happens.
I tend to use paper roll for the skirts (around sills etc) and plastic for the apertures as its way easier to work

Funny you say that, I can see the dust attracting to it daily, as it's a temporary just for the primer coat it'll be binned straight after and new stuff going on just before top coat.
Paper roll, yes, I was given 1 from a paint shop on eBay as a thank you for using us. Still have it unused but might crack it out soon.
I normally paint the interior the same as outside color and that should be done before outside color goes on to make life easier and save on masking up everything twice/thrice !

Spent most of today smoothing the engine bay and tapping out minor dents but as it's engine bay I try not to go ballistic . I have left in the seam weld lumps to give it the toughened look. Cut the holes for the oil cooler on each side too make life easier later on.

I'm at a fork in the road now, the strut brace bar I bought from MST but no mounts so I can either make them up and weld on just in front of the tower holes which is best, or make those gantry type that bolt to the strut top bolts not ideal for actual strength, only looks.. reckon I'll be welding on strut bar triangles tomorrow before I primer everything.
