New cams must never be run under 3000RPM for the first 10min.

Yeah I ran in the cam for 20 mins, do you reckn that my symptoms sound like improper run-in??

Getting a SOHC cam tolerance right is tricky, not moving the top locking nut while you tighten the bottom nut. is the fun part.
Tap each follower after you check each one.
If it sounds tinny, it will sound like a typewriter when running.

Over three grand. You remove the face off the followers if it idals.
I did leave the question for someone in the know.

DiD you have valves ground or seats cut or cam bushes changed? Have you fitted new follower arms with the cam ? Pintos can be real $hit fights when the geometry is changed and big cam fitted. just re set your valve clearences carefully and run it again and see or should I say listen.

I can't see that being a problem.

The cam gear tolerance will always change if you don't hold the top nut still. It will loosen 20 thou between the follower/camshaft, when you bottom out the bottom nut.

How did you set the valve clearance, if you used the "hot" settings then it will definitely tap loudly. Otherwise if you actually had a problem of an eaten lobe you would see it straight away in your oil.

You don't really need to break the cam in. Start the engine without the rocker cover and make sure the spray bar is doing its job. Unless you are running heavy valve springs (100lbs +) with really aggresive lobes it would be hard to wipe out a lobe especially on break in. There really isn't anything to "break in" on a follower style cam. Its more important to prime the oil system but how many people do that.

Break in proceedures are aimed primarily at OHV motors like V8's with flat tappet cams. The revs are to ensure sufficent oil pressure and lifter rotation.

I personally have never seen a flat lobe from incorrect break in, only worn out or damaged from incorrect tolerances.
