Hi guys,

Have just bolted the head back on the block and done everything up nice and tight and it occurred to me I cant remember what position I had the cam in before I took off the old head.

Looking from the front of the engine, pistons 1 & 3 are at their highest point in the block and I have reassembled the head with the locating arrow thing on the cam pointing straight up.

I am reading through some manuals now to try to work out if I screwed or not and was hoping someone here may be able to help me as I don't want to stuff everything up first time I crank it over.

look again, it can't be 1 & 3 at tdc.

Borrow a degree wheel and dial indicator and just check that the timing is what you expect. You won't setup the degree wheel dead right but if you use the ignition timing marks to set the wheel at TDC at least you've know if you've made a oooppss before it becomes ooopp$$$$

It should be 1 & 4 at TDC, get the timing marks on the cover at least close, and if you look at the cam with the rocker cover off your first inlet and exhaust lobes on the cam should be 2 o'clock and 10 o'clock (both at top 45 degree angles, cant remember what ones first) and u should be sweet, yea the mark should be on the top to from memory so ur probably all good

Close but not quite ...

The lobes on NUMBER 4 should be in this position which means it will be on the ignition stroke on No:1. this is what you need.

Then just make sure the rotor button in the distributor is pointing to No:1 and not No:4 and you will be right.

i thought ricketwagon was right, if the lobes were pointing up at 10 oclock and 2 oclock, both the valves on no1 would be closed so no.1 would be ready to fire ?, i usually just put a straight edge across the lobes on number 1 and get it level to the head, point the dissy to no1 with no1 piston at tdc, but it has been a while

Well, thats how I set mine up a couple months ago and shes all good, I also think the plate brhind the belt pulley on the head only goes on one way, let us know how u go Matt

Hi Guys,

Got it sorted and it even fires up!

It was 1 & 4 at TDC not 1 & 3. My apologies.

I had it right the first time.

Thanks to all who replied.

It is great to know there are a band of brothers out their to help those of us who don;t have all the knowledge but are keen to have a go.
