Hi everyone,

Just wanted to know how far is the lowest practical/legal ride hight & the best way to do it cheaply for a cortina mk2.

I was thinking about 3 inches (75mm) But can you go further

In Qld you have to maintain 2/3rds of the factory travel. In the rear the gap is measured between the bumpstop and the corresponding surface (where the bumpstop hits)

I dropped mine by 2.5 inches using blocks at the rear and lowered escort springs on the front. I guess your question depends a lot on what you consider 'practical' as everyone has there own interpretation on it. It will also depends on where and how low your exhaust is.

My sugestion would be to fit a set of coil overs with springs on the front (under $300) and then get the rear to where you want it using timber blocks as spacers - then measure and have the leaves reset or blocks made/ordered to the height you want. Otherwise just throw some 'low' escort springs in or take to them with an angle grinder (not recommmended)

Once you've done this, be sure to match your new height with appropriate shock absorbers.

Thanks guys, there are some good ideas Sean. I like the Idea of using wood blocks to get test ride hight.

I have found out that In NSW, the Lowest part of the car can be no less than 100mm from the road at its normal loaded weight.

Smcka coil over kit - $155
Pair of springs to suit - $120

OR

$299 for the complete Otomoto kit.

2 different options with both under $300!


Labour is free when it is your own The job isn't very hard.

Shock absorbers are the expensive part depending on what you get.

I was trying to figure out why it was going to cost a lot more for me. Then i remembered that I dont have MK2 2L or Capri struts.

Standard MK2 cortina struts are too small for a coilover kit, aren't they ?

Standard MK2 cortina struts are the same diameter as the 2lt escort stuts. They also have the same spring platform diameters so you can swap springs as well. I believe mk1 cortina maybe be the narrower 48mmm type??? Both mk1 and mk2 cortina do have the stub axle which is the larger type as per capri and twin cam escort.

The otomoto kit is available in either 45, 48, 51 and 55mm diameters so would do both types regardless.

Best get out with the vernier and double check[;^)]
