Hi guys

I know someone who has a mk 1 4 door 1500 auto with a seized motor

Would an escort 1600 be an easy swap over to get it going and if so would there be any major mods required

Cheers in advance

Cortina Mk1 engines non crossflow front bowl Kents vs Escort rear bowl crossflow type Kents. Main hastles are exhaust on different side and swaping sumps and having to redrill the dipstick hole in the blanked off position and fill in the old one.... Not quite a straight swap over but still relatively easy and more than achievable at home with limited experience.....

PS I only play with Mk2 Escorts, but having talked to a few people over the years and read magazine articles - that is what they say about the conversion...

Exhaust is on the same side, however the Carb is on the opposite side though which means modifying the linkages etc which is a fiddly job. There are also other differences, like the way the sump pick up attaches, dipstick hole, flex plate/flywheel (4 bolt instead of 6 bolt) and others I can't think of off the top of my head.

If you were to do it I would suggest a MK2 cortina as a donor car for the throttle linkage arrangment, and engine having the sump, dipstick and pick up in the correct spots.

The chances of finding a good Mk2 Cortina Auto complete with a good engine are slim. A later Escort 1600 will be more likely, but then you will need to mismatch a combo of parts to get it to fit (eg: timing cover, pick up and sump from Mk2 cortina)

Personally, if it were mine I'd stick with the 1500 and reco it. It's not a big job, and in my opinion less mucking around with finding bits to convert a 1600.

Thanks guys

I think you have made it clear that the best bet may be to do a simple rebuild , the car keeps its matching numbers and with the mucking around its probably the fastest and cheapest option

Thank for the response much appreciated

Cheers Craig
