Well said Bernie!
I am really conscious of recycling and minimising waste.
I am very conscious of what I purchase and if I really need it.
Preserving the older cars is a wonderful way of minimising my impact on our Mother Earth.
Knowledgeable educated friends often look down and call me a "car nut" (with all the associated stigma) because I have owned my car since 1980 and another since 1986.
They on the other hand often trade their cars in every 3 to 5 years for a brand new car of the latest "technology".
One guy laughs at me and says he has never had to buy new tyres, or buy a new battery.
So I wonder who the "car nut" actually is?
Who's ego is being satisfied?
I wonder about his impact on the environment, the costs in natural resources tied up in his new car, including electricity and fossil fuels to manufacture his new car.
And the costs to the environment to recycle his car when one small component fails and is not economically replaceable thereby rendering the entire car useless.
How much aluminium has it taken to make his fancy engine and his big masculine wheels?
Which country has profited by his choice to buy the new car?
Where has his money gone exactly?
How much is it costing him in depreciation?
Re your comment "to have fuel economy as their only "raison d'etre" ". It is easy to reduce fuel consumption for any car: choose to walk, or ride the treadly, or just cancel a trip every now and then.
All of these new cars look really sexy and must be wonderful to own and drive.
However I dislike the responsibilities needed to keep them.
Exactly where will it all go next?
How many cd players, air bags and widgets does everyone need to get to the shops or to get to work, or take the kids to school?
When will people be really happy with what they already have?
The new car's appear to be growing in size. And there are ever increasing numbers of them.
But there is usually only one person in them.
My old car seems to get stuck in heavy traffic just as easily as the modern cars.
My old car seems to do the speed limit just as easily as the modern cars.
But on a cold winter's morning it would be nice to have a warm heater.
And gosh wouldn't it be nice to have a radio with those fangle new push buttons....
But then no.....I just love BabyBlue just as she is.
Regarding the plastic bags: well just avoid supermarkets and processed food and there will be no need for plastic bags made in china.
