just an FYI for anyone ever in need - the core I have, and posted a photo above didn't fit. It seems, my 1976 Mk2 still had a Mk1 heater box, and a Mk1 heater core.. managed to make it work with some slight modification.. The core pipes leave the firewall into the engine bay about 3 inches higher than the original.

good tip mate, a data base of things like that would be so handy. Little things like that could save a lot of headaches for some people

From memory the earlier mk2's (late 75 - 76) had the steel type heater box and the 77 on the plastic type..... Good to here you got it all back together and the 'adapt and overcome' spirit is still alive and well

from 'demister man' ? i too bought this same core from him, and as mentioned luckily adapted it to get it working, and it sure works great, provides good heat.

yes, completely correct. wish i had of known this for a more 'complete' finish on the project. The steel box also incorporates the Mk1 heater core, quite different from the usual mk2.. never mind, it's in and working. just for reference, this is the correct heater core for the early mk2s
 

Mine is a 1980 model so hope it just slips straight in.

My RS is a 1980 model, with plastic heater box as posted earlier in this subject, Has the core with straight pipes which fits straight thru holes in the firewall.
