I've got a set of these alloy hubs off smcka (originally rally design ones?)

I have the inner bearing, Timken cone 15580 and cup 15520. So that's sorted. But what goes in the outer one? I got some standard 2L ones, but they're way too small.

I've taken the lot to the local bearing shop and he had a measure, looked at his books and concluded that nothing would fit. He suggested going to an engineering company down the road and getting a sleeve machined up so the standard bearing would fit. I guess it would mean I can use the cheap standard bearing, but is this the done thing, getting sleeve made up?

Has anyone fitted these alloy hubs to a 2L strut at all? If so, what bearings did you use??

Check the sizes for v6 capri.
The hubs are manufactured to suit english type struts which are closer to Aus. Capri struts then the metric Aus two litre struts.
I would try and find a whole new bearing, there is definetley bearings available to suit the hub, the inner cone just may not suit the 2lt spindle. In my opinion it would be better to make a sleeve to shrink over the strut spindle.

These are the hub dimensions and bearing designations required for the different designs...You need RS escort/Capri for sure

Yes Timkin numbers and yes odd sizes...

Escort
outer LM11749/LM11710 max 1.5710-min 1.5700
inner L44649/L44610 max 1.9810-min 1.9800

RS escort / Mk1 Capri
outer LM11949/LM11910 max 1.7820-min 1.7810
Inner 1988/1922 Max2.2510-min 2.2500

Thanks for the replies guys. I've got the LM11749/LM11710 set, so will go grab a LM11949/LM11910 set to see how that goes.

Hey hak073.
Sorry to dig up an old post but did you ever find a solution to the above bearing problem? Ive gotten myself into the same situation.
Cheers

Are you trying to match alloy hubs to standard Aus struts? If so you will need to make sleeves to match the Capri sized stub axles which is what hak073 did (from memory).

Paul is spot on. I had to make some sleeves for the outer bearing to fit the Oz 2L stub axle.

The bearings I used were:
Outer (small one) Timken SET2 LM11949-LM11910
Inner (large one) Timken cone 15580 cup 15520

The inner one fitted the hub and stub axle ok. But the outer one needed a sleeve made up that looks like these:

The spacers are 14mm wide, 19mm outer dia and 17.45mm inner dia. These are rough dimensions, we had the bearings with us and just machined till they were a nice tight fit. Same with the inner one on the stub axle.

Also with the vented rotors I had are clearance issues with the 2L struts. The hubs need a few mm (I think I did 3mm off both hubs) taken off the disc mounting face. You might be able to sort something with washers/spacers to move the caliper in/out.

Before pic. Calipers were offset.

After taking 3mm off the back side of them. All lined up ok.

Another area which is improved by machining the hub is increased clearance between the rotor and track rod boot. On a car I had for a while then on sold the boot was worn through from contacting the vented rotor. Mind you this had the stock steel hubs and it may also differ between manufacturers track rod ends (differing boot profiles etc).

After much deliberation I managed to pick up a set of Gaz Gold struts so these hubs bolt straight up however there's never a free lunch 😡 . Now I need different rod ends to match my metric quick rack to the imperial taper of these struts.

Hi Paul, you need these or get your steering arms redrilled to suit the Aussie tie rods

Thanks Matt. I have googled it a little but I was still a little confused as to if the "UK RS2000" items are similar??
