Peoples,
I have just put new Gaz inserts, Kmack 1 1/2 in lowered coils and adjustable strut tops in the car. The issue is a hard banging sound from the left front suspension, not all the time and over different types of bumps and joins in the road surface etc. The problems I can think of are, loose strut nut, not enough clearance between spring coils or I have the wrong strut in the left hand side of the car.
  • I have checked the strut nut, seems to be tight.
  • If the coil spring was binding then I would see marks between the coils as the paint would be damaged, I can see no marks.
So I am starting to think that an Escort Twin Cam strut has been used on the left side, the reason for me thinking this is the tab on the side of the strut  that supports the flexible hose connection to the solid brake line is a fully enclosed hole and not a fork or prong arrangement like my other Capri struts.
  • Can some one explain to me how to identify a Twin Cam verses Capri strut thanks
I am at a bit of a loss with this one as I can see no real differences and a quick measure with the trusty steel rule, gives me no real indication that a spring cup has a different installed height etc.

Put a rattle gun on the top nut as they can seem tight but really isn't.Come across same problem myself.

Did you make sure that the bump stop height was adjusted to suit the travel of the new set up.  Maybe its just bottoming out on the bump stop.  I assume your inserts were in nice and tight.

Out to the shed I ran, big spanner in hand, gave the top nut a good old turn. Bang goes the spring under the car, a test drive is now taken. Still the bloody same. If the car was bottoming on the bump stops I would assume that it would be a dull kinda thump and not a bang. I suppose the big question really must be is 1 1/2 inch lower than standard too low and causes issues?

I just took the car for another drive, came home and stuck my head under the gard with a torch, I can not believe it the coils are binding on each other. I will be in contact with Kmac first thing monday morning.
